Job Overview:
Kuumba Academy Charter School (KACS) is seeking a passionate and creative K–8 Art Teacher to join our team. The ideal candidate will be committed to using the visual arts to inspire and empower students across all grade levels. This educator will demonstrate a strong ability to design engaging, culturally responsive lessons that integrate the arts into a holistic educational experience. Responsibilities of Kuumba Academy Teachers Include but Are Not Limited to:
Academic Achievement and Character Development
Create a vibrant, inclusive, and achievement-oriented art classroom for students in grades K–8
Develop and implement standards-aligned art lessons that build students’ technical skills, creativity, and appreciation for diverse artistic traditions
Integrate the arts with core academic subjects through interdisciplinary, project-based learning
Use visual arts to promote student voice, identity development, and cultural expression
Collaborate with grade-level teams to support arts-integrated instructional units
Showcase student work throughout the building and lead school-wide exhibitions and performances
Utilize student data and observations to tailor instruction to individual and group needs
Provide differentiated instruction to ensure all students are challenged and supported in their artistic growth
Foster a love for the arts while building a safe and respectful studio culture
Art teacher will be evaluated using DTGSS
Professional Growth and Development
Collaborate with instructional coaches, grade level chairs, and school team to continuously improve instructional, culture-building, and leadership skills
Participate enthusiastically in all professional development, team planning, and data analysis meetings
Function as a school-wide partner in helping to raise student achievement and character for all students in the school reinforcing school-wide expectations and volunteering to take on additional activities as needed to improve school culture
Skills and Characteristics
Strong classroom management and student engagement skills across K–8 age groups
Deep knowledge of visual art techniques, materials, and culturally diverse art history
Ability to create developmentally appropriate art experiences for students at all grade levels
Highly organized with strong planning and time management abilities
Team-oriented, reflective, and open to feedback
Belief in Kuumba’s mission and commitment to whole-child, culturally responsive education
Enthusiasm for interdisciplinary instruction and arts-integration
Educational Background and Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree in Art Education or a related field
Valid Delaware teaching certification in Art Education (required or in progress)
Two years of successful teaching experience preferred, particularly in urban or arts-focused settings
