Primary Purpose:

Prepare and serve meals that meet federal school meal nutrition standards while supporting efficient, safe, and consistent daily kitchen operations.

This role requires attention to detail, the ability to follow established systems, and a commitment to providing positive customer experiences.

Qualifications/Skills:

Education/Certification:

  • High school graduate or equivalent preferred.
  • Must obtain a valid Food Handler Certification within 30 days of employment
  • Must meet annual USDA Professional Standards requirements 

Special Knowledge/Skills:

  • Ability to speak and read English
  • Ability to accept direction and constructive feedback and apply it to improve performance
  • Ability to understand and communicate basic job-related information to follow instructions and interact with students and staff
  • Ability to work collaboratively and interact professionally with students, staff, and team members in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to travel to and work at different school locations as assigned based on operational needs
  • Ability to maintain regular attendance and arrive prepared for daily responsibilities
  • Ability to work efficiently and maintain a sense of urgency during meal service
  • Physical ability to do school nutrition work such as mopping, sweeping, putting up groceries, lifting (up to 30 lbs.), standing for extended periods of time, bending, stooping, etc.
  • Demonstrate good personal appearance and cleanliness in work habits.
  • Basic understanding or ability to learn school nutrition program requirements, including meal components, portion standards, and service procedures
  • Support evolving menu practices, including fresh and scratch-based food preparation as applicable
  • Support efforts to minimize food waste and ensure proper portioning and production practices
Major Duties and
Responsibilities:

Records, Reports and Clerical Support:

  • May assist with cashier duties on the serving line, as needed
  • Follow school nutrition guidelines to ensure meals are served correctly and meet program requirements
  • Use basic technology and equipment to support daily operations

Food Preparation and Serving: 

  • Prepare and serve food according to established procedures and methods in a timely manner.
  • Follow standardized recipes and production methods
  • Assist in multiple areas of the kitchen and serving line as needed
  • Ensure food is prepared and presented to meet quality and appearance standards 

Safety and Sanitation:

  • Follow all safety and sanitation procedures to ensure proper food handling and a safe work environment
  • Maintain cleanliness of work areas, equipment, and serving spaces 

 Other:

  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Supervisory
Responsibilities:
None
Equipment Used:Computer, calculator and various office equipment. Large and small kitchen equipment and tools including electric slicer, mixer, pressure steamer, sharp cutting tools, oven, dishwasher and food and utility cart.

  • This position requires regular in-person interaction with the public.

  • Repetitive hand motions.
  • Prolonged use of the computer.

  • Frequent stooping, bending, kneeling and climbing (ladder), lifting and carrying.

  • Exposure to extreme hot and cold temperatures.
  • Exposure to humidity extremes.

  • Exposure to chemical hazards.
  • Work with hands in water.
  • Work around machinery with moving parts.
  • Work on slippery surfaces.
