Job Description
Special Education Assistive Technology Facilitator (Itinerant) - TOSA (IDEA)

Education/Certification:

• Bachelor's degree in related field.
• Valid Texas Teacher Certificate or Teaching Certificate from out of state appropriate for position or similar Education Degree or related certification such as speech pathologist or occupational therapist.
• Assistive Technology experience preferred.
• Certification must meet requirements for becoming and remaining qualified for this position in a manner required by Federal and/or State law.

Special Knowledge/Skills: 

• Knowledge and skills regarding a wide range of assistive technology.  Commitment to professional development relating to assistive technology; continually working to remain current with various technologies and options for students with disabilities.
• Ability to train individuals and groups to use and understand assistive technology.
• Ability to work effectively and collaboratively with students, teachers, providers and parents.
• Ability to supervise, instruct, motivate and solve problems with co-workers.
• Ability to troubleshoot hardware and software issues and quickly grasp new technologies.
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision in itinerant settings.

Assessment:

• Assess students to determine if the use of assistive technology would assist in improving reading, writing, and communication abilities and/or enhance access to the curriculum.
• Provide consultation and support to staff and students to identify potential assistive technology tools and strategies to support student learning, access, and communication.
• Prepare written assessment reports according to district guidelines and timelines in collaboration with other professionals.

Instructional Strategies: 

• Support the use of assistive technology through data collection and data driven decisions.
• Adapt specialized assistive devices to individual student needs (e.g. communication devices, joysticks, adapted keyboards, mounts, switch interfaces, eye gaze, etc.) for the purpose of enhancing the learning opportunities of special education students.
• Serve as a resource to campuses by observing students, consulting with staff/students, providing education on how to utilize assistive technology, modeling effective use of assistive technology, and developing tools for progress monitoring.
• Ensure technology integration in the classroom.
• Deliver appropriate coaching, training, and resources to support the professional growth of individuals in the use of technology.
• Advise instructional staff on the use of various technology tools to aid content comprehension, and student demonstration of learning.

Student Growth and Development: 

• Train students, family members and staff on the use of assistive technology devices (e.g. in-service, workshops, group, individual or web based sessions).
• Provide technical assistance to school staff, students, and parents for the purpose of ensuring their ability to use new or existing devices, software and applications.
• Collaborate with appropriate instructional technology and assistive technology staff to meet the needs of students and teachers working with technology.
• Attend ARD meetings as necessary.

Equipment Management and Organization: 

• Maintain documents, files and records (license information, usage logs, inventory, etc.) for the purpose of providing up-to- date reference information.
• Transport a variety of items (e.g. devices, equipment, supplies etc.) for the purpose of providing materials in the classroom or transporting equipment for repair and/or modification.
• Identify basic problems with assistive technology programs and devices and troubleshoot solutions.
• Repair assistive devices, peripherals and request reinstalls of software for the purpose of maintaining equipment in a safe and functional operating condition.

Communication: 

• Support the collaboration and communication among school and district staff.
• Maintain a professional relationship with colleagues, students, parents and community members.
• Use effective communication skills to present information accurately and clearly (verbal and written).
• Collaborate with parents and school personnel about the student's development in the use of assistive technology.

Professional Growth and Development: 

• Attend professional development activities as determined by SBISD for the purposes of conveying or receiving information related to performing job functions.
• Comply with state, district and school regulations and policies.
• Research assistive devices, computer hardware and software applications, vendors, consultants, etc., for the purpose of being knowledgeable on trends and recommending acquisitions.
• Attend and participate in meetings and serve on staff committees as required.

Other:

• Ability to work effectively with both adults and children.
• Must have reliable transportation to travel between various campuses.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Mental Demands:

• Maintain emotional control under stress.
• Work with frequent interruptions.
• This position requires regular in-person interaction with the public.

Physical Demands: 

• Frequent standing, stooping, bending, pulling and pushing.
• Physical capacity to lift, transfer and otherwise assist students with physical disabilities (ability to lift 50 lbs.)
• Move small stacks of textbooks, media equipment, desk and other classroom equipment.
• May require occasional extended hours.
