The Juneau School District, located in Southeast Alaska, is accepting applications for the position of Director of Human Resources The school district offers a wide and varied educational program to students in preschool through grade twelve. Our enrollment is approximately 4,000 students, with 650 certified and classified permanent employees. This position serves on the Superintendent's Cabinet and is not represented by a bargaining unit.
SUMMARY: The Director of Human Resources serves as a member of the Superintendent's Cabinet and is the system leader for all district personnel functions and human capital strategy. The Director is responsible for the planning, coordination, and oversight of recruitment, hiring, onboarding, labor relations, employee performance systems, and compliance for all certificated and classified staff. This position ensures the district attracts, develops, and retains a high-quality workforce aligned to district priorities and student success. The Director works collaboratively with district and school leaders to provide guidance on personnel matters, ensure consistent implementation of policies and contracts, and promote a positive, high-performing organizational culture.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Master's degree or higher from a regionally accredited university.
- Two or more years of successful administrative experience, minimum.
- Experience in labor relations.
- Must have, or be eligible for and will obtain upon hire, an Alaska Type-B administrative certificate.
KNOWLEDGE:
- Human capital strategy and workforce development in education.
- Teacher and classified evaluation frameworks.
- Alaska labor law, collective bargaining, and public sector HR.
- Recruitment strategies in rural/remote districts.
- Organizational development and change management.
- Data systems and HR analytics.
ABILITIES:
- Ability to balance legal compliance with relational leadership.
- Ability to lead in politically sensitive environments.
- Ability to align multiple departments around HR systems.
- Ability to coach leaders through complex personnel issues.
- Ability to build trust with unions while maintaining district priorities.
- Ability to design systems, not just manage processes.
COMPENSATION:
This is a 261-day contract; salary placement is dependent on education and experience.
