Job Description
Job Title: K9 Police Officer
Wage/Hour Status: Exempt
Reports To: Chief of Police
Dept./School: Crandall ISD Police Department
Primary Purpose:
Patrol district property and assigned areas with a trained police service canine to protect
students, personnel, and visitors from physical harm and prevent property loss due to theft
or vandalism. Utilize a certified police canine for detection, tracking, and other authorized
law enforcement functions. Enforce all applicable municipal, county, and state laws. Work
independently and as part of the district's emergency operations and safety initiatives.
Qualifications:
Education/Certification:
• High school diploma or GED
• Texas Peace Officer License issued by Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE)
• Minimum of five (5) years full-time experience as a licensed peace officer
• Clear and valid Texas driver's license
• Must obtain and maintain K9 certification within department-established timeframe
Special Knowledge/Skills:
• General knowledge of criminal investigation, police report writing, and criminal laws
• Knowledge of K9 handling, deployment, and care (training provided if needed)
• Training and ability to subdue offenders, including use of firearms and restraints
• Ability to safely handle and care for assigned police canine
• Bonded as required by Texas Education Code §37.081(h)
• Ability to pass required physical, psychiatric, and drug tests
• Ability to work well with youth and adults
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
Law Enforcement
1. Patrol assigned campus(es) and district property with police canine.
2. Deploy K9 for detection of explosives, weapons, narcotics, or other authorized purposes.
3. Respond to calls concerning crisis situations, accidents, and reports of crime.
4. Investigate criminal offenses within district jurisdiction.
5. Collect and preserve evidence including witness statements and physical evidence.
6. Arrest perpetrators and file appropriate charges as necessary.
7. Write effective legal incident reports and testify in court when required.
8. Work cooperatively with other police agencies.
K9 Responsibilities
1. Maintain proper health, grooming, and housing of assigned police canine.
2. Ensure canine receives regular veterinary care and training.
3. Maintain training logs and certification records for canine team.
4. Participate in regular training to maintain operational readiness.
5. Safely transport and deploy canine in accordance with department policy.
Safety and Administration
1. Provide traffic control and event security as needed.
2. Operate all equipment according to established safety procedures.
3. Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures.
4. Compile, maintain, and file all required reports and records.
5. Maintain confidentiality and professionalism at all times.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
None
Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:
Tools/Equipment Used: District vehicle, K9 transport vehicle, firearms, restraints, security
equipment, two-way radio, computer and peripherals.
Posture: Prolonged sitting and standing; strenuous walking and climbing.
Motion: Frequent driving, deployment, and active K9 handling.
Lifting: Moderate lifting and carrying (15-75 pounds including K9 equipment).
Environment: Work inside and outside; exposure to weather and potential hazardous
situations including violent encounters.
Mental Demands: Maintain emotional control under stress; prolonged hours; on call 24
hours a day; responsibility for care and readiness of police canine.
