The Role Responsibilities

We are looking for a cultural advisor to fulfill our mission for our students, of a positive vision of their future for their family, community, and culture, so that they can pass it on to the next generation. By creating a future that includes our stories, language, and culture, keeping the promise of the elders who came before us, as we owe it to them to continue those connections. A connection that is part of our shared past, present, and future. The objective is to have Native students on the same academic level as their non-native counterparts and connect them to their Native culture. The seven sacred gifts form our core values; we will use them daily in our interactions with all creations. Embracing these gifts is a way to connect to our sense of place, ancestors, and future generations. We are looking for someone to continue our vision that we are not alone; we are together, building a better future for all our generations.

Role Requirements

As the ideal candidate, you will have a High School Diploma or post-secondary courses in a field related to the role's responsibilities. You will also have knowledge of and experience with Native American culture and practices. Maintain an expectation of respect, hard work, and positive growth. Develop rapport and trust with each student to motivate and inspire them to connect with their culture, history, and community. Reiterate the importance of attendance, good grades, higher education, and its impact on their future and that of Native Americans. Serve as a resource for educators to learn about and appreciate Native American cultural practices. Help students discover Native American cultural knowledge through a hands-on approach that teaches language, crafts, history, and contemporary issues affecting Native Americans.  Facilitate communication among students, parents, teachers, counselors, and administrators as a bridge or support. Depending on the nature of the information to be shared, utilize email, phone, or in-person communication. Collaborate with the Title VI Indian Education Coordinator to assist with speakers, post-secondary educational trips, businesses, and other organizations to provide students with opportunities to experience various career options and paths to success. Participate in field trips to colleges and other exploratory-based trips for students. Ensure students are appropriately supervised and follow the expectations of the Shawano School District and Title VI program during school hours or events.
