Position Summary:
Under the direction and supervision of a Speech and Language Pathologist, the Speech and Language Pathology Assistant (SLPA) assists in supplementing, enhancing, and extending speech/language therapy services by completing a variety of tasks such as, but not limited to, direct activities with students designed to develop pre-language and language skills, oral-motor control for speech production, vocalization, and use of assistive technology devices for communication. The SLPA serves students who have identified speech and language disorders and may have other disabilities as well. The SLPA must stay up to date with current research, advancements and best practice in speech and language pathology. This is a 10-month position.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Assist the Speech Language Pathologist in conducting assessments, screenings, and evaluations to identify communication disorders in students.
- Follows and implements documented IEP plans and provides progress monitoring.
- Implement therapeutic interventions and treatment plans under the supervision and guidance of the SLP.
- Provide one-on-one or group therapy sessions to students, incorporating various techniques and exercises to improve speech, language, and swallowing abilities.
- Document and maintain accurate and detailed records of student progress, goals, and treatment sessions.
- Collaborate with the SLP to develop and modify individualized treatment plans based on student needs and progress.
- Monitor and track student progress through objective measures such as standardized testing, observations, and data collection.
- Support students in the use of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) devices and technologies, as needed.
- Assist in the preparation and implementation of therapy materials, equipment, and resources.
- Provide guidance and instruction to family members, caregivers, and teachers on strategies to support students' communication goals and objectives.
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor's degree Speech-Language Pathology or qualifying degrees
- Delaware State license or eligibility for licensure as a Speech-Language Pathology Assistant
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team
