Description

Decatur is located in southwest Michigan in Van Buren County, about 25 miles west of Kalamazoo, Michigan. The school district serves students from within the Village of Decatur and encompasses all or parts of the Decatur, Hamilton, Volinia, Wayne, Lawrence and Paw Paw Townships. Decatur Public Schools serves about 1200 students in grades K-12. The District maintains four schools: Davis Elementary (grades Pre-K – 4), Decatur Middle School (grades 5-8), Decatur High School (grades 9-12) and Alternative Choice High School (grades 9-12). The Decatur Public Schools System offers a comprehensive education with opportunities in the core subject areas of mathematics, language arts, social studies and science as well as art, music and physical education opportunities. Decatur is proud of its award winning band program as well as its wonderful art department. The district is at the forefront of technology with many computer applications for students and teachers as well as virtual learning and virtual field trip opportunities. Decatur High School provides students with on-line courses through the Michigan Virtual University including Advanced Placement classes as well as distance learning classes that often hold dual enrollment status to provide Decatur students with a wide horizon of opportunity. Decatur Public School has a well above-average proportion of economically disadvantaged students (50%). The District student population has decreased slightly over the last six years.
