Description
The Shannon County School District 65-1 is a public school district located within the boundaries of the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. Shannon County is one of the two unorganized counties in the State of South Dakota. The two unorganized counties encompass two-thirds of the land area of the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. This school district has a yearly student enrollment of approximately 1500 students at four attendance centers: Rockyford, Wolf Creek, Batesland, and Red Shirt and an instructional staff of approximately 145. Ninety-five percent of the students are transported to and from the schools named above by bus. Approximately ninety-seven percent of the students attending Shannon county Schools are enrolled members of the Oglala Sioux Indian Tribe and live in small geographically isolated communities (6 persons per square mile.)
