Auburn School District
Description
Auburn School District provides quality educational programs to all students by professionally trained, highly educated staff. The district and the communities it serves work together to ensure the continuation of these high standards of service. The district encompasses a 62-mile area bridging King and Pierce counties, and serves approximately 75,000 residents in Auburn, Algona, Pacific, Lake Tapps and unincorporated areas of King County. Auburn School District is committed to fulfilling its mission of providing our 17,000 students with an education that, in a culture of equity and excellence, we engage, educate and empower each student for success beyond graduation. A community ad-hoc committee developed a new strategic plan for 2017-22 that the ASD Board of Directors adopted in June of 2017 and guides our work. Community support for the Auburn School District is tremendous. In 2014, the community passed a technology levy to provide modern learning tools to our students. During the 17-18 school year, every student in grades 6-12 received a Chromebook for use at home and at school. In 2016, the community passed a $456,056,000 bond to replace six aging schools and build two new elementary schools. Ground-breaking on the first replacement school was in March, 2018. Our local levies have consistently passed for decades. We want high achievement for all students. At the elementary level, we follow the No Excuses University model to prepare each student for success. At the secondary level, we provide comprehensive course offerings for advanced placement, honors, career and technical education, and basic skills classes to prepare all students for career and college. We are implementing AVID at our middle schools in 2019-20 for even more rigorous learning for our students. Our goal is 100 percent of ASD students graduate. We are committed to high academic achievement for our diverse district. We use equity as a lens in all of our work. Our student demographics are: 31% Hispanic 10% Asian 10% Multi-racial 7% Black/African American 4% Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander 1% Native American 36% White Approximately 18% of our students are English Language Learners, 12% receive special education support and 52% of our students qualify for free or reduced lunch. Our certificated staff includes 1,073 teachers who receive student-focused, high-yield strategies training to enrich their instructional skills. Auburn School District has had great success in recruiting the most competent teachers to its classrooms. About 70 percent of our teachers hold a least a master’s degree and 10 percent of our teacher are Nationally Board Certified. The 951 classified staff members provide tremendous support for the instructional programs as well as student transportation, school safety, child nutrition, technology and maintenance. Auburn School District has three comprehensive high schools (grades 9-12), one alternative high school (grades 9-12), four middle schools (grades 6-8), and 14 elementary schools (grades K-5). We house early learning programs at several elementary schools and offer life skills for students ages 18-21 in a Transition Assistance Program. Our 15th elementary school will open in 2020.
