Description

There are eight schools in the county, grades K - 12: five elementary, one middle, one junior high school, and one high school, with a total enrollment of approximately 5,900 students. Each teacher in all of Prince George's schools is licensed. The elementary curriculum is built around the major subjects with emphasis on mastery of academic skills. An integrated approach is practiced in language arts instruction and includes reading, language, spelling, and writing. Math, science, English (language arts) and social studies are required in grades 6-8. Exploratory courses in art, music, computers, technology and careers are offered at each grade level. Students in grades 9-12 are required to take seven subjects unless they are enrolled in a work study program. There are five Advanced Placement (AP) courses available to students: calculus, government, English, Spanish, and U.S. History. Special programs are available for students of varying abilities. Academically gifted and talented students are served through Programs of Advanced and Creative Experience (PACE) , which may include participation in two Governor's Schools in neighboring localities. Students who excel in special areas such as math, art, and writing are offered programs during the summer months. Students who need additional help in reading receive instruction through Title I if they qualify. A vocational program at the high school level offers courses which include business education, marketing education, agricultural business, graphic communications, architectural and engineering drawing. An alternative education program is also available for students in grades 6-12. A full special education program is available for students who are identified with disabilities. Some of the programs that are offered include programs for the hearing impaired, speech impaired, emotionally disturbed, orthopedically impaired, learning disabled, mentally retarded, autistic, and preschool developmentall
