Description

Unified School District 254 serves students and families in a 718 square mile area of Medicine Lodge, KS, in Barber and Pratt Counties. K-12 Students attend one of three attendance centers. Students in K-5 attend Medicine Lodge Grade School and 6th-8th, Medicine Lodge Middle School. Medicine Lodge High School is a 3A school serving students in grades 9 through 12. The district provides a Four-Year-Old At- Risk program located at MLGS, and special education services which are provided by the South Central Kansas Special Education Cooperative in Pratt, KS. Medicine Lodge is located in the beautiful Gyp Hills at the intersection of Highways 160 and 281 at an elevation of 1,520 feet. It is 82 miles southwest of Wichita and positioned in south-central Kansas as the county seat for Barber County. Major industries include the National Gypsum Company mine and plant, various gas and oil businesses, ranching and agriculture. The average temperature is 56 degrees and the annual precipitation averages 21 inches of rain and 12 inches of snow. Health needs are provided through the services of a doctor, two physician’s assistants, two optometrists and a community health office. Eleven Protestant churches and two Roman Catholic churches are in the area. Medicine Lodge is famous for the historical Carrie Nation’s home and the re enactment of the Peace Treaty. North Barber School District 254 consists of the towns of Isabel, Lake City, Medicine Lodge, Sharon and Sun City. They have a total population of 2,516.

The community, parents, staff, faculty, students, administrators, and the Board of Education are committed, as educators, to establishing high expectations and an optimum level of individual student achievement. U.S.D. 254 will provide effective instructional leadership, responsible fiscal management, and a quality learning environment.
