Description
PURPOSE: To implement the District’s Strategic Plan by assisting the principal to provide effective leadership that will ensure student progress, foster an empowering learning community and make the best use of resources at the middle school level. The assistant principal’s role is intended to increase the effectiveness of the instructional program and its implementation with clarity, fidelity and a focus on learning resulting in increased student achievement and continuous improvement.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Possess valid Illinois Professional Educator License with Principal Endorsement
- Completion of the Growth through Learning Teacher Performance Evaluator Training Program
- Minimum of 5 years experience in an educational setting;
- Knowledge of exemplary instructional practices related to student achievement in grades 6-8;
- Strong knowledge of the middle school philosophy;
- Ability to work collaboratively with school and district personnel to improve student achievement;
- Knowledge of a broad range of materials, resources, and practices in 6-8 curriculum areas;
- Understanding of the needs of special education, EL and gifted students and related best practices;
- Ability to establish and maintain positive relationships with students and staff members; ability to organize, prioritize, work under time constraints and to be flexible in an environment of multiple tasks and changing priorities.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills;
- Demonstrated leadership skills.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assist the principal in the administration, educational leadership, organization, supervision, and safety of the school in cooperation with district personnel;
- Provide instructional leadership for staff - assist in the school improvement planning process and implementation;
- Supervise and evaluate staff as assigned by the principal;
- Share responsibility with the principal for the planning and implementation of professional development at the building level;
- Participate in the screening, interviewing and selection process for staff members as assigned;
- Support grade level teaming by regularly attending meetings, participating in team initiatives and promoting staff and student recognition.
- Establish and maintain positive relationships with students;
- Manage pertinent student placement information (including IEP, EL, etc.) to ensure appropriate placement of students in grade levels, teams, and classes;
- Coordinate articulations and transitions at each grade level 6-8;
- Support district-wide programs and district efforts by participating on committees and attending meetings as necessary;
- Share responsibility with principal for special education programs and problem solving initiatives; oversee all 504 plans for the building;
- Share responsibility with principal for reviewing expectations and consequences of behavior with students on an ongoing basis through the creation and distribution of the Student Handbook and periodic meetings with students and parents;
- Share responsibility with principal for monitoring and addressing student behavior issues including setting appropriate disciplinary consequences for regular and special education students and communicating with parents regarding disciplinary consequences, including suspensions.
- Promote and recognize positive student behavior through Student of the Month and other student recognition related activities;
- Coordinate grade reporting and distribution;
- Manage scheduling including assemblies, cafeteria/hallway supervision, and team meetings;
- Oversee student scheduling;
- Coordinate standardized testing and share assessment information with parents and teams;
- Manage day-to-day operations including emergency drills, bus duty supervision, school pictures, student attendance, PA announcements, detention, building calendar, facility usage;
- Serve as the principal in the absence of the regular and perform other duties as assigned by the principal;
- Assume other duties assigned by the principal/Superintendent.

New Hire Placement Annual Salary Range: $100,000 - $120,000
ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIP: Reports to the Principal
