Description

The Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind (FSDB) is the state's center public school for eligible hearing-impaired and visually-impaired students pre-school through 12th grade. There is no cost to families for tuition for eligible Florida residents. Founded in 1885, the School awards standard and special diplomas and prepares its graduates for a wide range of professional careers and trades. FSDB has an impressive 99% graduation rate. Each year, over 70% of the graduating class continues their education at colleges, universities, and technical training centers. The School is comprised of two departments: the Department for the Deaf and the Department for the Blind and Special Needs. The Special Needs Department serves students who are either deaf or blind and who have a secondary handicap which affects their ability to learn. From a Simple Beginning... Today, the Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind is the largest school of its type in the United States. The School has grown from three small buildings on five acres to 47 major buildings on 72 acres of land. From the original biennial appropriation of $20,000, the School has a current operating budget of over $40 million. The unspoiled natural beauty of coastal Florida provides the backdrop for the 70-plus acre campus of the Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind. Located in beautiful and historic St. Augustine, Florida, the nation’s oldest permanently settled city, the School is nestled on the banks of Florida’s scenic Intracoastal Waterway. White stucco, Spanish tiled roofs and moss-draped oaks create a serene setting in which to live, teach and play.
