Created in 1921, Glades County was named for the Florida Everglades. The county is located in south central Florida on the western bank of Lake Okeechobee - the largest fresh water lake in Florida that adds tremendous value to the quality of life in Glades County. We are well known for our tourism, cattle, fishing, sugar cane, produce, and citrus industries. We are located just over an hour from the cities of Ft. Myers to our west, West Palm Beach to our east, and just over 2 hours from the major theme parks and attractions of Orlando and Tampa. With a total population of over 11,000 in Glades County, the county seat of Moore Haven has a population of approximately 1,800 and is located on the banks of Lake Okeechobee and the Caloosahatchee River. The river is part of Florida's Intracoastal Waterway. There are five unincorporated communities in Glades County: Buckhead Ridge, Lakeport, Ortona, Palmdale, and Muse. The Western part of LaBelle is part of Glades County. The Brighton Seminole Indian Reservation is in northeast Glades County. The people of Glades County are diverse in their heritage, colorful in their history, and strong in their faith. People get along with one another as evidenced by low instances of crime. The schools are small, the teachers are dedicated and the children tend to be well behaved. Glades County is a great place to live, work, and play! We currently have 5 schools: Moore Haven Elementary and Moore Haven Middle Senior High in Moore Haven; Pemaytev Emahakv Charter Elementary School and Pemaytev Emahakv Charter Middle School on the Brighton Seminole Reservation; and West Glades K-8 School in LaBelle.
