The Suwannee River is the entire western boundary of Gilchrist County. We are a small county, covering only 348 square miles with a population of little more than 14,000. Gilchrist County was the last county formed in the State of Florida. It originally was to be called "Melon County", recognizing the area's agriculture. However, it was named for a former Florida governor, Albert H. Gilchrist, on December 5, 1925. Gilchrist County has grown 49 percent over the last 10 years due mostly to folks moving north from South Florida's urban living. We have two "towns", Trenton and Bell. Each has a middle/high school and an elementary school. We are within an hour's drive of the University of Florida, St. Leo University, Santa Fe Junior College, Lake City Community College, Central Florida Community College, and Florida Southern University, so our graduates have many choices for continuing their education.
