HAMDEN PUBLIC SCHOOLS

Title:
Classroom Teacher - Physical Education Teacher 

Qualifications:
Certification as determined by state certification authorities and other qualifications as determined by the Hamden Board of Education. 
Certification: 044 Physcial Education PK-12. Preference will be given to those with prior experience

Reports To:
Building Administrator or Director/Coordinator

Job Goal:
To guide students through the learning process by the effective application of instructional skills and knowledge of appropriate subject matter. 

Performance Responsibilities:

I. Planning
  1.  Follows the curriculum as adopted by the Board of Education.
  2.  Plans for classroom instruction with realistic goals which meet the individual student’s needs as well as the group’s needs. 
  3.  Demonstrates evidence of short and long term planning. 

II. Classroom Management
  1.  Establishes rapport with all students by demonstrating patience, acceptance, empathy, and interest in students through positive exchanges.
  2.  Exhibits enthusiasm for content and for learning.
  3.  Maintains a positive social and emotional atmosphere in the learning environment.
  4.  Create a climate that encourages all students to achieve.
  5.  Monitors the physical environment in an effort to maintain one that is safe and conducive to learning.
  6.  Communicates and reinforces appropriate standards of behavior for all students. 
   7. Engages a majority of the students in the activities of the lesson and attempts to re-engage any student persistently off tasks.
  8.  Makes resources and materials readily available

III. Instruction / Assessment
  1.  Aligns the content with the lesson objectives.
  2.  Chooses lesson content at an appropriate level of difficulty.
  3.  Creates a structure for learning including initiation and closure at appropriate points. 
  4.  Develops the lesson to promote achievement of the lesson objectives. 
  5.  Uses instructional arrangements of support lesson development.
  6.  Uses appropriate questioning techniques.
  7.  Communicates clearly.
  8.  Monitors student understanding and adjusts instruction when necessary.

IV. Human Relations:
  1.  Encourages learning through meaningful feedback to fellow staff, students, and parents. 
  2.  Promotes positive self-image and development of self-discipline.
  3.  Encourages and promotes consideration, tolerance, and respect for others.
  4.  Collaborates and cooperates with professional staff. 

V.  Professional Knowledge / Responsibility:
  1.  Assists administration in implementing district policies.
  2.  Fulfills non-teaching assignments as required.
  3.  Maintains the ethics of the profession.
  4.  Participates in curriculum development appropriate to assignment.
  5.  Shares teaching strategies, materials, and ideas with colleagues. 
  6.  Attends workshops to keep abreast of current trends in education and their impact on instruction.
  7.  Meets state requirements for continuing education units (CEU’s).

Work Environment:
Exposure to student illnesses. There is regular intermittent exposure to the computer screen. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud and is acceptable to this particular environment. The employee must work with students, staff and the public, continuously meeting multiple demands from several people.
