THE COMMUNITY: The Holly School District is a growing district on the major east/west highway (HWY 50) in the lower Arkansas Valley, 30 miles east of Lamar in Prowers County. It is bounded by Kansas to the East and 3 neighboring Colorado School Districts. With the mild four seasons, area agriculturists have some of the finest and most productive irrigated and dry land farms in the state. Annual average temperature is about 56 degrees with sunshine 75 percent of the year. The county is located in southeastern Colorado, with Lamar holding the county seat. Holly is 4 miles from the Kansas border, 30 miles from Lamar, and 150 miles from Pueblo. The town of Holly has a medical clinic and one nursing home. Stores and restaurants, as well as a community theater also are located in Holly. The area is home to many agricultural businesses as well as light industry. Prowers County’s natural setting and western tradition allows for tranquility and a peaceful lifestyle. Opportunity for lasting friendships and community involvement are found in schools, churches, youth, and civic organizations and community events. The town of Holly has an annual fair, and other community events. THE SCHOOL DISTRICT: The Holly School District is an accredited district through the Colorado Department of Education. The staff and community hold firmly to the value of a strong academic program and high expectations of achievement. The Holly School District emphasizes college preparation and also vocational programs of agriculture. College credit is awarded to students who enroll in courses offered by Lamar Community College at Holly High School. Computer technology is strength of the district. The school district is also on a 4-day school week. The district has a current funded pupil count of 308 students. The school’s childcare center offers a preschool program and daycare services to the community. Other educational programs include a gifted and talented program, both vocal and instrumental music programs, special education, and Title 1 Elementary school. The district is an active member of the Southeastern Colorado BOCES headquartered in Lamar. Holly Elementary students, as well as the Middle and High School students participate in numerous academic programs and competitions including Knowledge Bowl, FFA, and National Honor Society, Regional and State Science Fair and Spelling Bee. Holly High School recently moved into the 2A division of the Colorado High School Activities Association. The district offers participation in football, volleyball, basketball, track, wrestling, and baseball. The school district has had numerous state championship appearances in the last several years, along with several state championships, and state runner-ups.
