Description

The Community of Metlakatla supports a public school system, which is constituted by Alaska Statute. The school system provides a public education for all school-age residents on Annette Island to approximately 363 students in grades PreK-12. The district is governed by a 5 member Board of Education who are elected at large for 3-year terms and function in accordance with Alaska Department of Education Regulations with a comprehensive Board Policy. The Board employs a Superintendent of Schools, K-5 Principal, 6-8 Asst. Principal, and 9-12 Principal. Teaching staff consists of 31 certified teachers to perform teaching duties in the State of Alaska. They are supported by 25 classified staff members who perform a variety of business management, secretarial, custodial, maintenance and paraprofessional duties. The AISD supports a series of programs in the following areas: Title I, ., SpEd, Indian Ed., VocEd, STEM, Pre-K Montessori, and Community Ed Tribal College partnership. The School District programs are housed in several newly remodeled buildings, including RJ Elementary PreK-6,a Middle School 7-8 a High School 9-12. Also, schools within the district are accredited through the Northwest Accreditation Association and the district has a Local Educational Plan supporting the Alaska State Standards. We are preparing our student for career and college readiness and our high school was designated a four star, middle school a 3 star, and elementary a five star school by State of Alaska ASPI rating Standards.
