Description

Located in Glennallen, Alaska (approximately 200 miles east of Anchorage on the Glenn Highway), Glennallen Junior/Senior High School is the largest of the seven schools in the Copper River School District. GHS has an enrollment of approximately 180 students in grades 7-12 with 13 certified staff members. A popular destination for tourists, the Copper River Basin boasts some of the most spectacular scenery in the world. Glennallen sits at the edge of the Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and is a paradise for outdoors enthusiasts. Our small community has several locally-owned businesses, including grocery stores, gas stations, restaurants, B & B's, and a hotel. Anchorage is a short and scenic four-hour drive, as well, offering area residents the quiet contentment of rural life with easy access to city life.

Mission Statement

MISSION STATEMENT AND GOALS FOR THE COPPER RIVER SCHOOL DISTRICT The mission of the Copper River School District: Provide every student an equal opportunity to achieve success. Goal #1) Implement fully the state standard/grade-level expectations and the No Child Left Behind Act through better alignment between curriculum instruction and state assessments and the use of research-based instructional programs. Goal #2) Provide an adequate and safe environment for students. Goal #3) Continue upgrading the technological capabilities to enhance the instructional opportunities for students, and provide support services to sustain the technological operations of the school district. Goal #4) Improve the participation and grade completion rate of all students through improved parent participation in each student’s educational program. Goal #5) Create an atmosphere of trust and communication in which administrators, staff, Board of Education, and community members can work together for the benefit of students. Goal #6) Develop and implement Vocational Education Plan and build a liaison with corporate entities and community organizations. Goal #7) Obtain substantial outside/alternate funding through grants. GOALS FOR STUDENT LEARNING The School Board believes that a quality education provides an opportunity for each student to develop: 1. The concept of self-worth and the ability to exercise self-discipline. 2. A positive attitude toward responsible citizenship. 3. Mastery of the basic skills in mathematics, computers, reading, language arts (including reading, oral and written communication), the sciences, foreign languages and fine arts. 4. Skills and other competencies leading toward economic independence consistent with the individual’s interests and basic potential. 5.
