Overview:
Science Olympiad is a core extracurricular STEM program that allows two teams of 15 students each to train and compete at invitational, regional and state-level tournaments. The coach will be responsible for hosting after school practices, help secure resources for students, collect all event-tournament-purchase information on Schoology, communicate with students, school administration, and parents about the program from September through April. The coach will also take team(s) to tournaments and contribute to tournaments by writing tests or assisting other coaches. 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Hold information session(s) for students (new and returning) by September 10th to go over event rules for the season and ask interested students to submit their event choices via Google form.
  • Hold Parent Information Night in September and share program’s expectations from students, the dates for the various tournaments, fee structure, attendance policy, team structure, event assignment process etc.
  • Make team/event assignments based on students’ past performance, past and current classes enrolled, availability to attend practices and ability to work with partners, tryouts and counseling.
  • Set up and run a minimum of two after school practices a week for 90 minutes each, keep track of student attendance.
  • Assign and monitor student work during after school practices – assign tests from past archives, review binder work progress, build plans and track work progress for each student/event.
  • Use Schoology to communicate with students, upload calendar of tournaments, information about tournaments (schedules; bus timings; results; test sets; etc), curate the HS Science Olympiad page.
  • Process registrations with State Science Olympiad, and with invitational tournaments – teams attend a minimum of four invitational tournaments between January and March, one regionals and one state tournament.
  • Submit requisitions for purchase orders to pay for registrations (State and invitationals), and for vendors to buy materials for builds.
  • Order materials for builds from various vendors, including Amazon, team T-shirts etc. Help students borrow reusable classroom materials from various departments.
  • Reserve classroom space for after school practice on FMX, gym space for build testing.
  • Send regular updates (via email) to parents/families regarding practices, tournament logistics and results during the season. Update school administration on team performance.
  • Work with students to help them improve their performance during the tournament season leading up to Regionals and State tournaments
  • Run events at Invitationals or assist other coaches at Invitationals, Regionals and States.
  • Submit forms for Board of Education permission to take teams to invitational tournaments, field trip permission forms, bus request forms etc.
  • Request EMR for students before going to tournaments.
  • Connect with the Transportation department before the tournament to get bus driver information and to confirm pick up place, time etc.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Superintendent or his/her designee.

Key Qualifications:
  • Valid Ohio educator license or permit
 
The Successful Candidate Will:
  • Connect students with resources for their events/builds/labs and help them gain confidence.
  • Connect faculty/parents/community members who are subject matter experts with students so they can get additional coaching/mentoring.
  • Help students meet expectations vis-à-vis attendance, preparation, practice, teamwork etc.
  • Help students stay organized and on-task for each of their events.
  • Encourage students to look at summer opportunities to grow further in their Science Olympiad areas of interest.
