Description

JOB TITLE:                           School Counselor, Secondary (7-12)
 
REPORTS TO:                       Principal, Superintendent/Superintendent Designee
 
EMPLOYMENT STATUS:    Full Time – 186 Days
 
SUPERVISES:                        Students
 
 
POSITION DESCRIPTION: The Guidance Counselor will provide activities and the environment for a broad, comprehensive developmental guidance program involving students, parents, teachers, administrators, specialists, and community agencies.
 
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: To be qualified for this position, applicants must possess:
  • Master's Degree;
  • Valid School Counselor licensure, certification, and/or registration as required by the Ohio Department of Education;
  • Successful counseling experience desired;
  • Willingness and ability to work with students and staff as a team member;
  • Effective and demonstrated problem solving, critical thinking, analytical, oral and written communication, and organizational skills;
  • Computer expertise appropriate to the position;
  • Valid driver's license;
  • History of strong work record, including good job attendance; and
  • Documented evidence of acceptable criminal record as required by Ohio law and Board Policy.
 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE POSITION

An individual employed by the Butler Technology and Career Development Schools in this job is expected to perform the following essential functions and duties, however, this list is not exhaustive, and the employee is required to perform any other duties assigned.
  • Provide students information about educational, career and personal-social concerns;
  • Provide services to students that appraises their abilities, achievements, and interests and maintain records for providing up-to-date information about the student;
  • Provide students the opportunity to grow and mature by discussing their concerns in small groups or individual counseling sessions;
  • Provide consultative services to assist adults in working together to help the student;
  • Provide parent conference services to promote dialogue among students, parents, and school personnel;
  • Provide students with current information to assist them in making decisions relative to transition from one level of education to another;
  • Contribute to the creation of an environment of high achievement, continual improvement, professional growth, and acceptance;
  • Work cooperatively with staff and community members to efficiently coordinate services;
  • Confer with supervisor regarding progress, concerns, and recommendations;
  • Maintain confidentiality of student and other information;
  • Maintain high standards of ethics, honesty and integrity in all matters;
  • Communicate effectively with students, staff, administration, and the community;
  • Project a positive image of career technical education;
  • Be available to parents, students, and other staff members and/or sponsoring agencies for education related purposes;
  • Be willing and able to devote the time and effort necessary to do the job effectively;
  • Be punctual and regular in attendance in job duties and meetings;
  • Comply with applicable state and federal regulations;
  • Comply with all Board Policies and Administrative Guidelines;
  • Report incidents (e.g., fights, suspected child abuse, harassment, bullying, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining personal safety of students, providing a positive learning environment, and adhering to state law and Board Policy;
  • Update and improve professional competence by attending a maximum of two (2) professional development activities per school year;
  • Achieve and maintain technological proficiency with district operating systems and programs;
  • Complete, submit/utilize reports and forms as the position requires;
  • Assist with the development of the Master Schedule;
  • Assist students with the selection and scheduling of specific classes;
  • Promote positive work habits in students;
  • Provide coordination services to students and parents for referral agencies and individuals recommended by the school district;
  • Provide information to be used to assist in the assessment for continued improvement of the student services program;
  • Plan and organize own work to meet deadlines;
  • Promote, include, and support Career Technical Student Organization activities as prescribed;
  • Follow regulations regarding the handling of money including district purchasing cards, purchase orders, purchasing cards, CTSO accounts, etc;
  • Provide guidance in-service for staff and new teacher orientation training activities;
  • Provide students, parents, home school personnel, and the community at large with the objectives of the career center and of the office of student services;
  • Arrive on time to work each regular school day;
  • Model non-discriminatory practices in all activities;
  • Report the presence of unauthorized or atypical visitors;

  • Be in attendance every regular school day, excluding long-term illnesses, maternity/ paternity leaves, and other unique circumstances; and
  • Perform other duties, consistent with the position, as may be assigned.
 

OTHER DUTIES AND FUNCTIONS:

  • Counselor will be allotted 10 additional work days to use for School Counseling related work, as needed.
  • Attend appropriate school-related activities;
  • Perform duty assignments e.g., parking lot, cafeteria, restroom, courtyard.
  • Serve as a role model for students in how to conduct themselves as citizens and as responsible, intelligent human beings;
  • Help instill in students the belief in and practice of ethical principles and democratic values.
 

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND CONDITIONS

Occasional: Exposure to inclement weather driving conditions; interaction with unruly students and adults; dust, hazardous chemicals, blood borne pathogens, and other contaminants; heavy equipment; attend functions or perform duties outside of normal working hours; travel to other facilities for professional duties
 
Frequent: Prolonged periods of standing; moving and lifting supplies and materials up to 50 lbs.; seated computer/desk work; working under time constraints; operation of computer and related office equipment; exposure to moderate to loud noise levels. This position is very active and requires standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, crawling and climbing all day. Regularly required to talk and hear.
Employees are required to follow all district safety rules and procedures, and participate in school safety training when requested.
