Zuni Public Schools
Description
The Zuni Public School District is located on the Zuni Indian Reservation located 35 miles southwest of Gallup, New Mexico. The District was established on July 1, 1980 by official action of the New Mexico State Board of Education after years of planning by the Zuni people through their tribal government. The student body of the district is 99% Zuni with some non-Zuni students, and is non-discriminatory in terms of race, creed, religion, disability or place of origin. The current enrollment is approximately 1750 students. The District serves one Tribal Head Start program, two parochial schools, two elementary schools, one intermediate school, one middle school, and two high schools. The Zuni people have maintained a strong traditional, religious, linguistic, and cultural heritage. The Zuni language is considered unique among the Native American languages spoken in New Mexico. The language is predominant in homes, tribal government, religious, social and cultural interactions. The tribe has an extended family system where aunts, uncles, and grandparents assume and participate in many parental responsibilities. The Zuni culture and Zuni language instruction are components of the District's academic curriculum which were designed using State curriculum standards and benchmarks as a guide. The survival of the Zuni tribe as unique people requires that the children explore and develop an understanding of their culture and language. Community participation using their resources and parental involvement are also embedded in the cultural and language instructions. The District offers employment to "Highly Qualified" individuals in compliance with the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act and House Bill 212 passed by NM Legislative for sy 2004-05.
