Sussex-Wantage Regional School District

Description

Nestled in the rural hills of Sussex County, the Sussex-Wantage Regional School District provides a comprehensive educational program and supporting learning environment for children in Pre-School through Grade 8. In an era of restricted school budgets, Sussex-Wantage has not only maintained a well-rounded educational program that supports the whole child, but has expanded our offerings. Program planning is clearly focused on our mission: to educate each individual to become a confident, competent lifelong learner and productive, responsible citizen by providing challenging opportunities through the partnership of families, school, and community. Our district serves over 1,200 students in three schools: Pre-School through Grade 2 in the Clifton E. Lawrence School, Grades 3–5 in the Wantage School, and Grades 6–8 in the Sussex Middle School. Our students attend High Point Regional High School in Grade 9. As a member of the regional school community, teams of teachers in each discipline review and update the curriculum to meet the Common Core Standards and PARCC performance expectations to ensure articulation between the schools. The Sussex-Wantage Regional School district is committed to educating the whole child by attending to students’ academic, social-emotional, and physical needs. In addition to the core content areas of English language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies, we continue to provide a well-balanced program in music, art, media science, physical education, and Spanish, with special area teachers providing instruction in each discipline. The district’s Gephard Environmental Center provides opportunities for classes to study environmental science and other curricular pursuits outdoors. The site is also utilized for team-building and Project Adventure activities as part of our character education program. We have built our technology capacity to create digital learning environments that enhance instruction and assessment of learning. In addition to adopting Google Apps for Education, the district utilizes several online resources to augment the curriculum and communicate with parents about their children’s ongoing academic progress, such as Pearson SuccessNet, Raz Kids, Study Island, and Realtime grade reporting. To ensure that students’ diverse needs are met, our principals, counselors, nurses, psychologists, learning consultants, and social workers coordinate our Intervention and Referral Services plans. Our Child Study Teams also support a strong special education department, which enables us to provide a range of services and programs for our students with special needs. Beyond the school year, we offer summer school in both the general and special education programs. The district also offers both Integrated and Pre-School disabilities classes. Community members with pre-school age children are encouraged to join our educational program early. The CE Lawrence and Wantage Schools also offer an after-care program to assist working parents in caring for their children after school. The Sussex-Wantage Regional School District works closely with community organizations to provide numerous programs for our students and their families. The Parent-Teacher Organization is also very active in the district and provides a multitude of resources for our students by supporting teachers’ special projects and school activities. Families are encouraged to participate in our Parent Academy Workshops, Family Math and Reading Nights, and other school events to join in learning activities with their children. We look forward to the opportunity to share the wonderful happenings in our district with you.
