Job Title
Speech Language Specialist

Reports to:
Supervisor of Special Services/Principal

Supervisory Responsibilities:
No supervisory responsibilities.

Term of Employment
10 months (September - June)

Salary: 
Salary determined by the GEHR Board of Education and commensurate with experience.

Job Goal: 
The Speech-Language Specialist identifies and supports students with speech, language, voice, and fluency disorders that affect educational performance. As a member of the Child Study Team, the specialist works collaboratively with educators, students, and families to promote effective communication skills essential for academic and social success. The specialist provides diagnostic, therapeutic, and consultative services, ensuring that each student’s Individualized Education Program (IEP) goals are met in compliance with state and federal regulations.

Qualifications:
Education: 

  • Master’s degree in Speech-Language Pathology from an accredited college or university.
 
License/Certification:
  • Valid New Jersey Speech-Language Specialist Certificate
  • Valid New Jersey license to practice Speech-Language Pathology (as required by NJDOE and NJ Division of Consumer Affairs)
  • Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC-SLP) from ASHA preferred
  • Successful completion of required criminal history review background check and sexual misconduct/child abuse disclosure process
  • Proof of US citizenship or legal resident alien status
  
Experience/Background:
  • Experience providing speech and language services to children and adolescents, preferably in a school setting
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct comprehensive speech and language evaluations and develop detailed reports
  • Proficiency in planning and delivering individualized and group therapy sessions 
  • Knowledge of current best practices, intervention strategies, and assistive technology in speech-language pathology 
  • Familiarity with the development and implementation of IEPs 
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with school staff, students, and families
  • Strong oral and written communication skills

Responsibilities:
  1. Evaluation and Diagnosis:
    1. Conducts thorough speech, language, and communication assessments in accordance with NJ Administrative Code
    2. Collects and interprets relevant data from teachers, parents, and standardized tools
    3. Prepares comprehensive evaluation reports with clear diagnoses and educationally relevant recommendations
    4. Participates in eligibility determinations and re-evaluation processes as a Child Study Team member
 
  1. IEP Development:
    1. Develops and contributes to Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) for students requiring speech-language services
    2. Specifies measurable annual goals, short-term objectives, service delivery methods, and accommodations
    3. Attends and actively participates in IEP meetings, providing expertise on communication-related needs
 
  1. Therapeutic Services:
    1. Provides direct therapy services to students, both individually and in groups, in accordance with their IEPs
    2. Selects and implements evidence-based strategies and materials to address identified needs
    3. Monitors and documents student progress toward IEP goals and communicates progress with relevant stakeholder
 
  1. Consultation and Collaboration:
    1. Consults with teachers, parents, and administrators to support classroom-based language and communication strategies
    2. Provides guidance to staff regarding modifications and supports for students with speech and language impairments
    3. Collaborates with external professionals and community agencies when appropriate
 
      5. Compliance and Documentation:

                  a.Maintains accurate and timely records of evaluations, therapy sessions, progress reports, and communications
                  b.Ensures all services are provided in accordance with state and federal special education laws and district policies
                  c.Secures parental consent when necessary and respects confidentiality of student records

  1. Professionalism and Growth:
    1. Maintains active licensure and certification through ongoing professional development
    2. Keeps current with research, trends, and changes in the field of speech-language pathology and education
    3. Participates in relevant in-service training, workshops, and professional learning communities
  2. Environment and Preparation:
    1. Maintains a therapy environment conducive to effective service delivery, ensuring privacy and safety
    2. Prepares and organizes materials and schedules for maximum efficiency and student benefit

8. Relationship Building:

  1. Establishes a positive rapport with students, encouraging trust and engagement
  2. Builds supportive partnerships with families to promote carryover of skills in the home environment
  3. Maintains professional relationships with colleagues and external partners to support student needs
