Wilson County School District

The Wilson County School System serves approximately 15,750 students in pre-kindergarten through adult education. Twelve elementary schools, two middle schools, four high schools, one adult high school, one alternative school and an adult basic education program make up the twenty-one sites. The Wilson County School System is committed to excellence in all areas of education. The system strives to obtain the best teachers and administrators possible. Of the 1,187 people employed in positions that require state certification, over 50 percent have attained an educational degree at the Masters level or higher. All Wilson County Schools and the Board of Education are accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Council on Accreditation and School Improvement. The school system has lowered pupil-teacher ratios, employed reading and math coaches, increased the number of teaching assistants, and increased the number of counselors, added school nurses and a School Health Coordinator as a way of providing better service to the students of Wilson County. Wilson County has worked to improve its delivery system of educational technology. Library/Media Centers, offices, and classrooms are wired for Internet access. Teachers and students use the technology in many new and exciting ways, including on-line and distance learning.

The Wilson County Board of Education has the following goals and beliefs: 1. The educational responsibility is a partnership jointly shared by students, parents, teachers, staff, and community. 2. Schools must be clean, safe, drug free, disciplined, appropriately staffed, and well equipped for all students and teachers. 3. A strong sense of self-worth and dignity is essential for families, students, community, staff and teachers. 4. The partnership should be committed to the recruitment and retention of quality employees. 5. All students and employees should experience some joy in each day. 6. Schools are learning communities where all partners are life-long learners. 7. Our school system, as a steward of public funds, shall be accountable to the citizens it serves. 8. Students learn in different ways and at different rates and should be challenged to achieve high standards. 9. Schools will succeed, if they have clear instructional goals, high expectations, and highly motivated staff. 10. Schools and families have a responsibility to help students develop physically, socially, emotionally, and artistically as well as in academic skills and citizenship. 11. Students who have regular attendance, caring staff and supportive families, and who complete high school will become more productive citizens. 12. The success of the child depends upon the support of not only the school, but also the family and the community.
