General Purpose of Position: An exceptional student education (ESE) Instructional Assistant (IA) works closely with the Classroom Teacher to provide support and assistance to our students. The IA helps to facilitate the participation of our students within their classroom environment and ensure the overall wellbeing within the educational setting. Successful candidates will be able to follow directions, work independently, and adapt to changing priorities in a dynamic environment with strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
Position Summary: Under the direct supervision of the Classroom Teacher and indirect supervision of the Principal, the IA’s key responsibilities include (but not limited to):
Assist in Instructional Activities: Support special education teachers in delivering instruction by providing one-on-one or small group assistance to students with disabilities, reinforcing concepts taught in class, and helping students complete assignments and activities.
Implement Accommodations and Modifications: Implement accommodations and modifications outlined in students' Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), including adapting materials, providing alternative assignments, and offering assistive technology support to meet diverse learning needs.
Provide Behavioral Support: Assist in managing student behavior by implementing behavior management strategies, reinforcing positive behaviors, de-escalating conflicts, and supporting students in following classroom rules and expectations.
Promote Inclusion and Engagement: Foster a supportive and inclusive classroom environment by encouraging participation, facilitating peer interactions, promoting social skills development, and helping students build relationships with classmates.
Support Functional Skills Development: Assist students with disabilities in developing essential life skills, such as communication, self-care, organization, and problem-solving, through structured activities and practical experiences.
Assist with Personal Care Needs: Provide assistance with personal care tasks, such as toileting, feeding, as needed, ensuring students' health and safety in accordance with individualized plans and protocols.
Collaborate with Team Members: Work collaboratively with special education teachers, therapists, support staff, and parents/guardians to coordinate services, share information, and address students' individual needs effectively.
Document Student Progress: Maintain accurate records of student attendance, behavior, and academic performance, as well as anecdotal notes and progress reports, to track student progress, communicate with team members, and support data-driven decision-making.
Ensure Safety and Accessibility: Monitor the physical environment to ensure safety and accessibility for students with disabilities, including arranging furniture, equipment, and materials to accommodate mobility devices and sensory needs.
All other duties as assigned by ESE Teacher and/or FACE Principal.
