Description
JOB TITLE: Day Porter Custodial (FLSA: Non-Exempt)
JOB OBJECTIVE: To assist the plant manager in ensuring the school building and grounds are clean and functioning in a manner that will promote a safe and attractive educational environment.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- High school diploma or relevant qualification required
- 6-12 months’ porter experience
- Must be reliable and professional
- Prepared to execute all duties and responsibilities in a safe and timely manner
RESPONSIBILITIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Cleaning Duties for Classrooms (Including Portable Classrooms)
- Daily (Five (5) days per week)
- Empty wastebaskets and replace liners
- Spot clean all windows
- Clean, sanitize and disinfect counters, desk tops and sinks etc.
- Dust mop all composition floors (with chemically treated dust mop)
- Spot mop composition floors with all-purpose cleaner
- Vacuum all carpets
- Spot clean carpet to remove all stains, spills, and soiled spots/carpet care carpeted areas to include shampooing
- Vacuum walk-off mats
- Empty pencil sharpeners and clean wall around pencil sharpener
- Check safety of ramps, steps and porch at portable classrooms. Report any unsafe conditions to Plant Manager/Plant Manager Supervisor
- Remove fingerprints from doors, frames, light switches, kick plates, handles and railings
- Coordination of duties with Plant Manager/Plant Manager Supervisor, and other Custodians as needed
- Notify Plant Manager/Plant Manager Supervisor of any dangerous or unsafe condition.
- General Cleaning tasks such as dusting, mopping, sweeping, waxing floors and vacuuming.
- Refilling supplies, such as toilet paper, paper towels, soap, etc.
- Cleaning spills, broken glass and other messes up as quickly as possible.
- Taking out garbage, recycling, and other debris as needed.
- Low dust all horizontal surfaces to hand height (70”)
- Damp clean baseboards
- Damp clean window ledges
- Spot clean desktops
- Vacuum chalk rails and/or damp wipe
- Clean all chalk and other instructional boards
- Must provide weekly buffing program for low traffic areas as needed
- Day porter to assist Plant Manager/Plant Manager Supervisor as needed
- High dust above hand height horizontal surfaces, including shelves, ceilings, moldings, pipes, ducts, heating, outlet etc.
- Remove dust and cobwebs from ceiling areas and lights
- Day porter to assist Plant Manager/Plant Manager Supervisor as needed
- Spray buff composition floors
- Clean/dust all HVAC vents and grilles
- Clean entire surfaces of student’s desks and chairs
- Refinish all composition floors
- Clean carpet to remove all stains, spills, and soiled spots/carpet care on all carpeted areas to include shampooing, extraction, and timely drying of carpet
- Clean/dust all HVAC vents and grilles
A. Daily (Five (5) days per week)
- Empty wastebasket and replace liners
- Dust furniture and fixtures, including desks, chairs, tables, lamps, etc.
- Dust interior window ledges
- Dust telephones
- Spot clean all windows and glass partitions to hand height
- Spot clean desktops
- Dust mop all composition floors (with chemically treated dust mop)
- Spot mop composition floors with all-purpose cleaners
- Vacuum carpet
- Spot clean carpet to remove all stains, spills and soiled spots
- Vacuum walk-off mats
- Remove fingerprints from doors, frames, light switches, and kick plates, and handles
- Notify Plant Manager/Plant Manager Supervisor of any dangerous or unsafe condition.
B. Weekly
- Low dust horizontal surfaces to hand height (70”)
- Damp clean baseboards
- Damp clean window ledges
- Spray buff composition floors
- High dust above hand height horizontal surfaces, including shelves, ceilings, moldings, pipes, ducts, heating outlets, etc.
- Remove dust and cobwebs from ceiling areas
- Dust blinds
- All crevices must be wiped and cleaned with an approved method. (items such as paper towels will not be allowed)
- Clean/dust all HVAC vents and grilles
A. Daily (Five (5) days per week)
- Empty wastebasket and replace liners (items not identified as trash will not be disposed) Dust furniture and fixtures, including desks, chairs, tables etc.
- Dust interior window ledges
- Dust telephones
- Spot clean all windows and glass partitions to hand height
- Damp clean counter tops
- Damp clean vending machines
- Dust mop all composition floors (with chemically treated dust mop) Spot mop composition floors with all-purpose cleaners

- Dust cubicles, all crevices must be wiped and cleaned with an approved method. (items such as paper towels will not be allowed)
- Clean/dust all HVAC vents and grilles
- Damp clean all washable furniture
- Clean carpet to remove all stains, spills and soiled spots
A. Daily (Five (5) days per week)

- High dust above hand height horizontal surfaces, including shelves, ceilings, moldings, pipes, ducts, heating, outlet etc.
- Remove dust and cobwebs from ceiling areas

V. Cafeteria Area
A. Daily (Five (5) days per week)
- Spot clean interior glass to hand height – After school hours
- Remove trash from cafeteria
- Clean, sanitize and disinfect during lunch periods (wipe down tables, empty trash, and clean up spills)
- Sweep and mop
- Notify Plant Manager/Plant Manager Supervisor of any dangerous or unsafe condition.
- Refinish composition floors
- High dust above hand height horizontal surfaces, including shelves, ceilings, moldings, pipes, ducts, heating, outlet etc.
- Remove dust and cobweb from ceiling areas
- Clean underneath table as required
- Clean/dust all HVAC vents and grilles
A. Daily (Five (5) days per week) Areas: (Lobbies/Corridors/Stairs/Elevators)
- Clean glass partitions and doors
- Clean, sanitize and disinfect water fountains
- Dust interior window ledges
- Dust mop composition floors with chemically treated dust mop
- Spot mop composition floors with all-purpose cleaner

- Clean/dust all HVAC vents and grilles
- Refinish all composition floors
- Clean carpet to remove all stains, spills, and soiled spots
- Clean/dust all HVAC vents and grilles
- Restrooms/Dressing Rooms
- Check and clean all restrooms and dressing rooms throughout the school day minimum as required.
- Empty wastebaskets/dispensers and replace liners
- Clean, sanitize, disinfect and polish all vitreous fixtures including toilet bowls
- Clean and polish chrome fittings
- Clean, sanitize and disinfect toilet seats
- Clean and polish glass and mirrors
- Wash, sanitize and disinfect exterior of containers
- Remove spots, marks, stains, and splashes from wall area and counter tops
- Clean partitions
- Sweep floors
- Mop floors with germicidal disinfectant daily and as required
- Refill supplies (toilet tissue, paper towels, soap, etc.)

- Weekly

- Empty wastebaskets
- Remove fingerprints from doors, frames, light switches, kick plates, push plates, handles, railings, etc.
- Dust mop floors with chemically treated mop per manufacturers specifications or vacuum all carpeted areas
- Spot mop composition floors
- Spot clean carpeted areas and remove any stains, spills, or soiled spots
- Clean bleachers, remove all trash, sweep, mop and clean floor underneath
- Sweep baseboards
- Replace all plastic can liners in waste receptacles
- Low dust all horizontal surface to hand height (70”)
- Notify Plant Manager/Plant Manager Supervisor of any dangerous or unsafe condition.
- High dust above hand height (70”) all horizontal surfaces including shelves and molding
- Remove dust and cobwebs from ceiling areas
- Clean/dust all HVAC vents and grilles
NOTE: Scrub and refinish composition floors as needed
- Grounds (Including all Lawns, Sports Fields, Playgrounds and Loading Docks)
- Remove trash and debris from grounds (includes but is not limited to all areas from edge of building to property bounds)
- Empty trash containers
- Sweep entrances, doorways, walkways, steps and curbs
- Maintain clean restrooms, common areas, trash cans and area around concession stands
- Notify Plant Manager/Plant Manager Supervisor of any dangerous or unsafe condition.
- Miscellaneous
- Day porter shall assist Plant Manager/Plant Manager Supervisor with event setup as required
- Spray buff halls
- Monitor all restrooms after each class break-mop floor, spot clean sinks, vanities, counter tops, mirrors, floors, and walls, pick up paper and flush commodes and urinals, take out trash
- Pick up trash along side of building
- Day porter shall assist Plant Manager/Plant Manager Supervisor as required
- Clean and mop any accident that may occur during the day
- Maintain all window shades at the same height
- Respond to clean up requests by Building Engineers
- Clean electrical rooms and storage closets
- Assist in cafeteria as directed or required
- Metal on all mats, to include non-slip mats that are recessed in the floor, mats must be pressure washed. Recessed area must be cleaned
- Notify Plant Manager/Plant Manager Supervisor of any dangerous or unsafe condition.
- All VCT floors must be stripped or deep scrubbed every year applying a minimum of six (6) coats of wax on hallways, cafeterias and high traffic areas and a minimum of four (4) coats of wax on classrooms.
- Day Porter/Custodian job responsibility includes performing this work and/or assisting in the process, as well as annual cleaning of all other flooring surfaces.
- Proper methods, materials, tools and equipment used in custodial work and non-technical maintenance.
- Modern cleaning methods including basic methods of cleaning and preserving floors, carpets, furniture, walls and fixtures
- Basic record-keeping techniques
- Proper methods of storing equipment, materials and supplies
