JOB TITLE:  Head School Custodian

SUMMARY:  Directs and coordinates, either personally or through workers, functions involved in keeping the school building clean, orderly, and well-maintained. 

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS include the following: 

 

  1. Directs activities and performs with staff the daily duties involved in keeping the school clean, orderly, and well-maintained, such as sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, and vacuuming classrooms, offices, hallways, and stairs; cleaning and disinfecting restrooms and drinking fountains; and emptying trash/garbage containers.
  2. Supervises custodial personnel within building; directs activities and performs with staff the routine duties involved in keeping the school clean, orderly, and well-maintained with regard to painting, window washing, removal and re-application of floor wax, carpet cleaning, and minor activities involved with system utilities; administers employee handbook.
  3. Keeps an inventory of supplies, equipment, and fuel on hand and requisitions needed replacements from the principal far enough in advance so as to not hinder custodial duties.
  4. Directs activities and performs with staff the moving of furniture and/or equipment as requested by the principal.
  5. Complies with local and state laws and procedures for the storage and disposal of trash, rubbish, and waste.
  6. Performs light snow removal and salt application to icy walkways.
  7. Notifies the Supervisor of Buildings and Grounds concerning the need for major repairs to the building, furnishings, or utilities system.
  8. Participates in training as directed by the Supervisor of Buildings and Grounds.
  9. Performs such other tasks as may from time to time be assigned. 

 

SUPERVISORY  REQUIREMENTS:  Directly supervises custodial personnel in the school building.  Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the corporation's policies and applicable laws.  Responsibilities include planning, assigning, and directing work; record keeping; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints; resolving problems; and possible involvement with interviewing and hiring employees. 

   

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:  To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily.  The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.  Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. 

 

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: 

High school diploma or general education degree (GED), or six to 12 months related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience.  

 

LANGUAGE SKILLS: 

Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.  Ability to write simple correspondence.  Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to Supervisor of Buildings and Grounds, principal/assistant principal, and other employees of the corporation. 

 

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: 

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.  Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and interpret bar graphs. 

 

REASONING ABILITY: 

Ability to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.  Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations. 

 

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: 

Successful completion of an AHERA Awareness Training Program. 

 

OTHER SKILLS: 

Ability to operate all custodial cleaning equipment.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear.  The employee is frequently required to sit; stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, and feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; or stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.  The employee is required to operate custodial cleaning equipment. 

 

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.  

 

 

 

CONTROLLED SUBSTANCES:  The employee shall remain free of any alcohol or nonprescribed controlled substance abuse in the workplace throughout his/her employment in the Corporation.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes, or airborne particles, and toxic or caustic chemicals. 

  

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.  The work environment is smoke free. 

 

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:  Hourly wages.  Salary and benefits to be determined by the School Board. 

 

EVALUATION:  Performance will be evaluated by the Supervisor of Buildings and Maintenance in accordance with School Board policy.
