Maintenance Technician – Wastewater Operations and Plumbing

Department: Maintenance Pay Grade: 67 Employment: Full-time, 40 hours per week Reports To: Director of Maintenance and Area Lead

Position Summary

Rockingham County Schools seeks a Maintenance Technician with plumbing experience to lead the day-to-day operation and maintenance of the district's elementary school wastewater treatment facility, including sand bed filtration systems and pumps.

This employee will also serve on a zone maintenance team, providing plumbing repairs and maintenance for schools within the assigned area. The district maintains approximately 3,000,000 square feet of facilities, and this position supports safe, reliable facilities for students and staff.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Wastewater Operations

  • Lead daily operation, inspection, and maintenance of the wastewater treatment facility.
  • Monitor sand bed filtration systems, pumps, controls, and related equipment; identify and report operating concerns.
  • Collect wastewater samples, arrange delivery or shipment for testing, and maintain sampling records.
  • Maintain filtration beds and keep the facility accessible and orderly, including trimming weeds and branches as needed.
  • Maintain accurate operating logs, inspection records, sampling results, and maintenance documentation.
  • Enter data and prepare required reports for state reporting systems.
  • Respond to questions and requests from state representatives, coordinating with district leadership as needed.
  • Coordinate repairs, testing, and technical assistance with district staff and contractors.

Plumbing and District Maintenance

  • Troubleshoot, repair, install, and maintain plumbing fixtures, piping, valves, drains, and related equipment.
  • Respond to leaks, blockages, plumbing failures, and assigned work orders throughout the maintenance zone.
  • Work cooperatively with the zone maintenance team and other district personnel.
  • Assist with other trades and general maintenance duties as needed, including carpentry, grounds work, painting, and equipment repairs, within the employee's training and qualifications.
  • Maintain tools, equipment, and work areas; follow safe work practices.
  • Complete work orders and document repairs, materials used, and follow-up needs.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Must possess a wastewater operator 1 certification, or be willing and able to obtain the required certification within one year of employment.
  • Plumbing experience is strongly preferred. Plumbing licenses, trade certifications, and related maintenance experience are highly valued.
  • Ability to learn and operate wastewater treatment equipment and follow sampling, maintenance, and reporting procedures.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records and use computer-based work order and reporting systems.
  • Ability to troubleshoot problems, prioritize work, and communicate effectively with staff, contractors, and state representatives.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a maintenance team.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to operate district vehicles.

Work Requirements and Conditions

  • Participate in the rotating on-call schedule, approximately once every five to six weeks, and respond to after-hours emergencies as assigned.
  • Be willing to report to work during snow and other inclement weather when safe to do so, including assisting with snow removal and emergency maintenance.
  • Work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Perform physical maintenance tasks, including lifting and carrying materials, bending, kneeling, climbing, and working around wastewater equipment.
  • Follow required safety procedures and use appropriate personal protective equipment.
  • Lift 50 pounds
  • Able to work on ladders and lifts up to 50 ft.
