Title: At-Risk Teacher

Reports To: Building and Assistant Principals

Employment Terms:

Position Overview:  

The at-risk teacher is responsible for providing high-quality, individualized instruction to students who are at risk of academic failure, behavioral challenges, or disengagement from the traditional school setting. This position supports students in credit recovery, skill development, and personal growth through a flexible and student-centered learning environment.  The at-risk teacher plays a vital role in re-engaging students, closing learning gaps, and preparing them for successful transitions to traditional school settings, graduation, and postsecondary opportunities.

Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor's degree in education
  • Valid Missouri Teacher Certificate
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Skills in human relations, leadership, and conflict management
  • Creativity, flexibility, and a passion for teaching and learning
  • Knowledgeable of teaching techniques that meet the diverse needs of students
  • Teaching experience with social-emotional learning, credit recovery, and differentiated instruction preferred
  • Working knowledge of Professional Learning Communities preferred

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Strong understanding of child development and age-appropriate teaching practices.
  • Provides instruction and supplemental learning activities in core content areas based on the age and needs of the student.
  • Develops lesson plans, instructional materials, and provides individualized and small group instruction to adapt instructional strategies to meet the needs of students with varying learning styles and abilities.
  • Monitors progress and provides instructional support towards credit acquisition.
  • Provides additional support and accommodations for students with special needs or English Language Learners (ELL).
  • Integrates technology and hands-on activities to enhance student learning and engagement as appropriate.
  • Evaluates students’ academic and social growth, keeps appropriate records, and prepares progress reports.
  • Organizes and maintains a system for accurate and complete record-keeping, grading, and reporting for all student activities, including achievement, behavior, and attendance as required by district procedures and applicable laws.
  • Fosters students’ social-emotional development by teaching collaboration, empathy, and problem-solving skills.
  • Maintains open and effective communication with students, parents, and other school staff involved with the student.
  • Collaborates with other teachers, administrators, and support staff to foster a supportive school community.
  • Collaborates with specialists, counselors, and families to support student success.
  • Collaborates with outside agencies such as FCCBH, dependent upon position and students’ needs.
  • Establishes and maintains a positive, inclusive, and respectful classroom environment.
  • Implements effective classroom management techniques to ensure a safe and productive learning space.
  • Creates a welcoming and engaging physical space that supports and celebrates learning and fosters a sense of pride.
  • Supervises students in activities occurring in and outside the classroom during the school day, including activities on and off campus, and those involving school transportation.
  • Engages in after-school responsibilities, including parent-teacher conferences, student events, and professional development sessions.
  • Administers assessments in accordance with district policies.
  • Ensures confidentiality of sensitive student information.
  • Actively participates in professional development opportunities and faculty meetings.
  • Applies new learning and skills acquired through professional development that aligns with the District CSIP and building goals.
  • Abides by all district policies and procedures as outlined by board policy and teacher handbooks.
  • Complies with all administrator directives.
  • Engages in self-evaluation with regard to performance and professional growth.

Physical Requirements/Environmental Factors:

  • Ability to work in a climate-controlled building, as well as in inclement weather.
  • Ability to stand, walk, and move around for long periods of time.
  • Ability to see and read, with or without vision aids, a computer screen and printed matter, and to distinguish colors. 
  • Sufficient hearing to understand speech at normal room levels, and to hear and understand speech on the telephone.
  • Manual dexterity to operate a telephone and enter data into a computer using both hands.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and efficiently with sufficient volume to be heard in normal conversation, on the telephone, and addressing groups.
  • Ability to exert up to 30 pounds of force to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.
  • Ability to lift, bend, stoop, pull, grasp, and carry a variety of objects of different shapes and sizes.
  • Able to perform other duties assigned by the Superintendent or designee.
