ONTARIO LOCAL SCHOOLS JOB DESCRIPTION

 

    Position:    Intervention Specialist High School

 

    Reports to:    Building Principal 

 

    Employment Status:    Regular/Full-time 

 

    FLSA Status:    Exempt 

 

    Description: Manages classroom and implements appropriate programs, develops Individual Education Programs (IEPs), conducts and participates in team meetings and parent conferences, supervises classroom assistants and volunteers, liaison with juvenile court officers and other children's protection agencies.

 

    NOTE:    The below lists are not ranked in order of importance

 

Essential Functions:

•    Ensure safety of students

•    Implement Individual Education Plan objectives through classroom activities including small group, individual and large group lessons

•    Follow the established and approved policies and guidelines of the Ontario Board of Education

•    Develop and implement behavior management plans for students as needed

•    Maintain a safe environment for all students using crisis intervention techniques if warranted

•    Maintain a classroom conducive to learning and free of health and safety hazards

•    Develop schedules and lesson plans for classroom day allowing for a variety of activities and special events appropriate for student IEP goals

•    Communicate progress to parents and other school personnel in compliance with state and program policies and procedures

•    Conduct preliminary and ongoing evaluations of student levels and needs through formal and informal means

•    Elicit input from parents, caseworkers, LEA representatives and others involved in student program development

•    Design appropriate goals and objectives for student IEPs based on evaluations and staff and parent input

•    Adjust IEPs as needed based on documentation of progress, or problems indicating the need for adjustment of original goals and objectives

•    Work cooperatively to develop programming and evaluation through disciplinary teaming approach

•    Conduct IEP parent conferences as necessary to fulfill program objectives for participation in special education programming for ED students

•    Provide direction and training to instructor assistants and/or volunteers assigned to the classroom

•    Communicate to instructor assistants information necessary for student program implementation

•    Schedule daily routine for instructor assistants assigned to the classroom

•    Interact in a positive manner with staff, students and parents

•    Maintain respect at all times for confidential information, e.g., student grades

•    Promote good public relations by personal appearance, attitude and conversation

•    Attend meetings and inservices as required

•    Identify and address inappropriate behaviors

•    Adapt regular curriculum and provide alternative teaching techniques to enhance student level

•    Control budget to select textbooks, equipment and supplies

•    Attend work regularly and punctually

•    Demonstrate a positive work ethic

 

Other Duties and Responsibilities:

•    Attend staff, IEP, behavior management, team evaluation and curriculum meetings as necessary

•    Work cooperatively with support staff to schedule time for related service evaluation and implementation

•    Perform other duties as assigned by the Superintendent, Building Principal or their designee

 

Qualifications:

•    Bachelor's degree in education from an accredited college or university

•    Appropriate State of Ohio teaching certifications/license

•    Meet the applicable requirements of a "highly qualified" teacher under the No Child Left Behind Act within the

    appropriate timelines

•    Experience and/or training which evidences the ability to instruct severe behaviorally handicapped students

•    Training in Crisis Intervention

•    Alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent and/or Board of Education may find appropriate

•    Occasional exposure to blood, bodily fluids, and tissue

•    Occasionally lift, carry, push, and pull various items up to a maximum of 50 pounds

•    Occasional operation of a vehicle in inclement weather conditions, i.e., being prepared to work on all scheduled school days, except calamity days

•    Frequent repetitive hand motion, e.g., computer keyboard, calculator, writing

•    Occasional travel

•    Occasional evening/weekend work
