SUBSTITUTE CUSTODIAN - HOURLY

REPORTS TO
:  Director of Maintenance/Administrator in assigned location

    
JOB DESCRIPTION
Under the general direction of the Custodial Supervisor and the Director of Maintenance and Building Administrator, the Substitute Custodian is responsible for the cleaning and maintenance of the building and grounds, using the appropriate materials, methods, policies and procedures.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: (Essential Job Functions)
Day & Night Custodian Duties and Responsibilities

  • Regular attendance to perform assigned duties
  • Maintain proper storage of hazardous chemicals
  • Maintain a safe work area
  • Wear all required Personal Protective Equipment
  • Assist maintenance with the installation of building lighting.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the custodial supervisor in collaboration with the building Principal.

Day Custodian Duties and Responsibilities

  • General maintenance duties (e.g., clean and mop floors as needed, empty trash cans throughout facility, promptly clean all floor spills and/or wet spots created by inclement weather, maintain entryways and hallways free of dirt and debris, Clean and sanitize all toilets, urinals, and sinks. Clean the cafeteria and assist with lunch duty cleanliness, wash building walls and windows, replenish restroom paper and soap dispensers as need)
  • Perform perimeter checks to maintain a clean outside environment, clear of rubbish and debris. Clean and dispose of any identified outside trash and debris.
  • Ensure snow or debris removal from sidewalks in front of building and surrounding building, utilize ice melt agent to ensure sidewalk safety.
  • Notify maintenance supervisor and management of the need for building repairs
  • Attend training to remain informed of OSHA regulations as it pertains to assigned duties; changing techniques in cleaning and maintenance
  • Clean, wipe sinks, and water coolers with disinfectant cleaner. Clean and sanitize microwave ovens and refrigerators
  • Insure fire exits and escapes are clear and ready for emergency use

Night Custodian Duties and Responsibilities

  • General maintenance duties (e.g., clean, mop, scrub and burnish floors as needed, empty trash cans, vacuum carpets, dust furniture, clean the cafeteria, wash walls and windows, replenish bathroom supplies)
  • Maintain a clean outside environment, clear of rubbish and debris
  • Clean snow or debris from sidewalks in front of building and surrounding building; notify management of the need for major repairs
  • Attend training to remain informed of OSHA regulations as it pertains to assigned duties; changing techniques in cleaning and maintenance
  • Mop stairs, platforms; clean wood work

 

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of:

  1. Cleaning methods and procedures
  2. MSDS requirements
  3. Appropriate use of cleaning chemicals and equipment
  4. OSHA Regulations as it pertains to assigned duties

Ability to:

  1. Work effectively in a team environment
  2. Follow directions
  3. Communicate orally and in writing
  4. Handle large, heavy equipment to perform assigned duties
  5. Maintain a safe working environment

 WORKING CONDITIONS:
Inside/outside environment; all types of weather, snow, rain, wind, heat and cold; frequently noisy, dirty, and dusty; vibration from equipment or tools; sometimes includes close quarters.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Walking, standing, squatting, lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, climbing, reaching, hearing and speaking to exchange information; seeing to monitor various activities; read documents, kneeling, bending at the waist, sitting and standing, walking or sitting for extended periods of time; reaching overhead, above shoulders, and horizontally, or bending at the waist; lifting heavy objects of thirty pounds are common. Requires manual dexterity, repetitive motions, hand/eye coordination, strength and endurance; occasional work at heights, use of heavy electric and manual equipment; requires alertness to potential hazards common in maintenance.

SAMPLE HAZARDS:

Possible exposure to hazardous chemicals; contact with dissatisfied or abusive individuals

TRAINING EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Any combination equivalent to a high school diploma/GED; 2 years custodial experience preferred
