Position Summary:

To instruct students in vocal and/or instrumental music in accordance with district curriculum, Pennsylvania Academic Standards for the Arts and Humanities, and applicable state and federal requirements.

Qualifications:

Education/Experience:

Bachelor's Degree or an acceptable equivalent

Certification:

Active and valid Teaching Certificate issued by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania for Music Education (PK-12) or appropriate certification for the assignment or position.

Skills/Knowledge/Abilities:

  • Knowledge of music theory, music history, vocal and instrumental techniques, music performance, and music appreciation
  • Knowledge of principles and methods for delivering standards-based curriculum and instruction for all students
  • Knowledge and ability to measure learning and review and evaluate testing scores and data
  • Ability to plan a program of study that differentiates curriculum for individual learners or groups
  • Ability to develop and maintain a safe classroom and rehearsal environment which maximizes the learning potential of each student
  • Knowledge of state standards
  • Ability to maintain students' records, progress reports, teacher observation checklists, lesson plans, and other documentation required by the employer or school law
  • Ability to effectively communicate with students, staff, parents/guardians, administrators, and community members
  • Ability to build and maintain working relationships with students, staff, parents/guardians, administrators, and community members
  • Ability to organize and direct vocal and/or instrumental ensembles and prepare students for performances
  • Ability to use laptop or desktop computer presentation and instructional software, music notation software, current software/technology packages, and related equipment
  • Ability to attend work regularly at assigned work hours subject to lawful leave rights and responsibilities
  • Ability and knowledge to use the internet as an instructional aid and research tool
  • Ability and knowledge to use technology to communicate with students, parents/guardians, staff, administrators, and community members

Physical:

  • Ability to stand, bend, stoop, sit, lift, reach, communicate (vision, hearing, and speech), carry or convey sufficient weight to safely and effectively carry out functions, duties, and responsibilities
  • Ability to independently ambulate in and around school buildings, locations associated with school events and field trips, and office areas
  • Ability to travel to and from assigned work locations without employer support
  • Ability to communicate via telephone and email system

Functions/Duties/Responsibilities:

Essential:

  • Demonstrated ability to instruct multiple instrumental ensembles, including marching band, concert band, and jazz band, among others.

  • Prepare students for concerts, performances, and other music-related activities
  • Maintain music equipment, instruments, sheet music, and instructional materials in accordance with employer procedures
