JOB SPECIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:
Education and experience as required by state certification authorities. The appropriate speech / language certification is required for this position.
Reports To: Director of Exceptional Education
Job Goal: To help or eliminate communication impairments that interfere with the individual student's ability to derive full benefit from the district's educational program.
Skills/Effort:
Ability to provide instruction to students through explanation, demonstration, and/or supervised practice. Ability to supervise students and maintain order in various classroom and instructional activities and situations. Ability to operate general office equipment in the performance of daily activities. Ability to prepare lesson plans, tests, and instructional materials for classroom activities. Ability to identify student adjustment and/or academic problems, provide counseling and/or recommend appropriate remedial action to parents. Ability to communicate effectively with students and their parents, district staff, and all other groups involved in the activities of the job.
Working Conditions:
Conducts duties in a classroom environment with no significant exposure to environmental conditions. Requires ability to work under a degree of stress-related duties that require constant attention and working with students. Physical demands are restricted to classroom work requiring lifting/moving of items up to 25 pounds. Occasional local travel is required; no overnight travel is required. Job requires the operation of standard office equipment.
Performance Responsibilities:
- Provide a program of therapy to meet individual needs of speech/language and hearing impaired children.
- Employ reliable assessment procedures, techniques, and standardized tests necessary for thorough and accurate diagnosis and assessment of pupil needs and behaviors related to voice, fluency, articulation and hearing.
- Provide screening to identify speech/language handicapped children at regular intervals and specified levels.
- Provide appropriate individualized programs of therapy to meet individual student's needs and correct existing speech or language impairments.
- Serve as a resource to school staff members in the development of a balanced program for speech/language improvement.
- Assist and guide teachers in observing, describing, and referring suspected and identified speech and language impairments.
- Assist in proper referrals of individuals to general practitioners, audiologist, and otolaryngologists in the community as appropriate.
- Collaborate with classroom teachers and other school staff members to implement therapy by suggestions for the student's daily activities.
- Provide in-service education and serve as a consultant to teachers, school staff members, and parents on topics concerning speech/language improvement.
- Keep thorough ongoing records for the individual students receiving therapy or other school-provided speech/language services through evaluations, IEP's, etc.
- Maintain lists of referred, screened, and eligible students as well as a directory of outside agencies, consultants, specialists, and related services.
- Evaluate the condition of work facilities and equipment in relation to pupil needs and makes recommendations to the appropriate supervisor and/or administrator.
- Provide and follow schedules for assigned schools and inform appropriate personnel of any departure from the schedule.
- Participate in self-designed and district staff development activities in order to promote own professional growth.
