JOB TITLE:  Elementary Classroom Teacher PREPARED BY:  SVS Human Resources

REPORTS TO:  Principal, Siletz Valley School PAY SCALE:  SVS Licensed Salary Schedule

 

PURPOSE:  Under the general supervision of the School Principal, to facilitate student success and growth in academic and interpersonal skills through implementing district approved curriculum; documenting teaching and student progress/activities/outcomes; addressing specific educational needs of individual students and by creating a flexible, safe and optimal learning environment; and providing feedback to students, parents and administration regarding student progress, expectations, goals, etc.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:  The following are examples of duties. However, any one position may not cover all duties listed; examples may not cover all duties an employee is expected to perform; and other duties may be assigned.

  • Administers approved elementary curriculum consistent with charter school goals and objectives.
  • Promotes a classroom environment that is safe and conducive to individualized and small group instruction, and student learning.
  • Develops lesson plans and instructional materials and translates lesson plans into learning experiences so as to best utilize the available time for instruction.
  • Conducts ongoing assessment of student learning, and modifies instructional methods to fit individual student's needs, including students with special needs; conducts individual and small group instruction as needed.
  • Instructs students in the principles of responsible citizenship and other subject matters specified in applicable laws, as well as administrative regulations and procedures of the school system.
  • Continues to acquire professional knowledge and learn of current developments in the educational field by attending seminars, workshops or professional meetings, or by conducting research.
  • Organizes and maintains a system for accurate and complete record-keeping, grading, and reporting for all student activities, achievement and attendance as required by charter school's procedures and applicable laws.
  • Encourages parental involvement in students' education and ensures effective communication with students and parents.
  • Ensures that student conduct conforms with the school's standards and school district policies, and establishes and maintains standards of pupil behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom.
  • Coordinates with other elementary professional staff members, especially within grade level, to evaluate and assess curriculum, and participates in faculty meetings and committees.
  • Selects and requisitions appropriate books, instructional aids and other supplies and equipment and maintains inventory records.
  • Supervises students in activities that take place out of the classroom during the school day, including activities involving school transportation.
  • Administers standardized tests in accordance with District and State testing programs.

  • Develops job skills necessary to meet changes in the position.
  • Meets applicable district physical ability/health and safety guidelines for the position.
  • Attends work regularly.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:  To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.   • Education and/or Experience:  Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Elementary Education or related discipline applicable to teaching assignment. Or, approved licensure from TSPC. Master's Degree in related areas preferred. Successful prior teaching experience for the appropriate grade levels is preferred.
  • Language Skills:  Ability to read and interpret documents such as curriculum guides, safety rules, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to communicate effectively with students, parents, and groups of employees and the general public.
  • Mathematical Skills:  Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
  • Reasoning Ability:  Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in various situations. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.
  • Computer Skills:  Ability to use computer network systems and software applications as needed, including data information systems for analysis and formulation of action plans. Proficiency with standard office equipment and educational technology tools.
  • Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:  Oregon State Certification as an Elementary Teacher. State certification in the appropriate grade level preferred. Other certificates as determined by SVS.
  • Interpersonal Skills:  Works well with others. Ability to work independently with little direction, set priorities and attend to details. Ability to communicate effectively with students and parents. Ability to engage in self-evaluation with regard to performance and professional growth. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others contacted in the course of work.
