Qualifications:
1. Minimum of High School Diploma
2. Proficiency in English
3. Demonstrate knowledge of sign language
4. Experience in educational setting preferred.
Reports To: PP BOCES Exceptional Students Director/Interpreter Coordinator
Job Summary:
Provide sign language modeling and instruction to students who are deaf and hard of hearing to facilitate access to communication in their school environment. Hourly rate begins at $20.75 hr.
Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Instruction and Classroom Management Skills
a. Assists teachers with implementing standards-based instructional strategies and curricula through providing sign language to deaf and hard of hearing students in the classroom.
b. Demonstrates ability to work with deaf and hard of hearing students utilizing sign language.
c. Addresses a variety of student learning styles and uses appropriate accommodations and modifications, under the direction of certified teachers.
d. Utilizes a variety of instructional materials including media and technology.
e. Ability to adapt to student learning styles and make appropriate accommodations and modifications, under the direction of certified teachers.
f. Promotes student growth and sense of self-worth.
2. Interpersonal Relationship Skills
a. Develops and maintains rapport, credibility and trust with all staff members.
b. Establishes and maintains good rapport with students, while maintaining professional teacher/student relationships.
c. Demonstrates good listening skills.
d. Shows sensitivity to the feelings of others.
e. Contributes to positive staff morale.
f. Fosters teamwork and collaboration with colleagues.
g. Resolves conflicts with others in a positive and direct manner and offers criticism through appropriate channels.

Evaluation:
This position shall be evaluated in accordance with board policy on personnel evaluations.
Salary, Working Time, Vacation, Etc.:
This position shall be 179 days (unless otherwise stated on the contract) per year based on the calendar(s) of the school district(s) to which you are assigned, with earned leave in accordance with Board policy. Travel to each of school districts on a weekly basis is required.
The salary shall be determined by education and experience in accordance with the BOCES Classified Salary Schedule (this can be found on our website at: http://www.ppboces.org/DocumentCenter/Index/152.
Working Conditions:
- Talking and hearing, walking, standing or bending is frequently required
- Reaching with hands and arms, climbing or balancing, stooping or kneeling is also required
- The employee must occasionally lift and/or move objects up to 25 pounds
- Travel to assigned job site(s) requires driving. Employee may be asked to drive to any member or associate member district at any time using personal or BOCES vehicle. Reimbursement in accordance with board policy.
- All required license(s) must be maintained in an active status without suspension or revocation throughout employment. Any employee may be required to stay at or return to work during meetings and/or emergencies to perform duties specific to this classification or to perform other duties as requested in an assigned position. This may require working a non-traditional work schedule or working outside normal assigned duties during the meeting and/or emergency.
