The K-6 Literacy Coach supports the implementation of high-quality literacy instruction across elementary grade levels by partnering with teachers, administrators, and instructional teams to improve student achievement in reading and writing. This position provides instructional coaching, professional development, data analysis support, and curriculum implementation guidance aligned to state standards and school initiatives. The Literacy Coach fosters a collaborative culture focused on evidence-based literacy practices and continuous instructional improvement in a virtual learning environment. 

 

This is a full-time, 12 month position requiring the ability to work independently for approximately 40 hours per week. A professional, distraction-free home office during the workday is required. Core hours are between 8:00 AM and 4:00 PM, while allowing for some flexibility as determined by school needs. 

 

Salary will commensurate with experience.

 

Essential Functions

  • Increase the implementation of evidence based literacy practices in K–6 classrooms, resulting in improved student proficiency in reading, writing, and foundational literacy skills.
  • Drive measurable improvements in instructional practice by modeling, coaching, and reinforcing research based literacy strategies in phonics, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, writing, and structured literacy instruction.
  • Support the consistent and high fidelity implementation of approved literacy curriculum, interventions, and instructional resources to improve student growth and achievement outcomes.
  • Conduct coaching cycles, instructional observations, collaborative planning, and feedback sessions designed to strengthen instructional effectiveness and increase implementation fidelity across literacy instruction.
  • Analyze benchmark, diagnostic, screening, progress monitoring, and student performance data to identify instructional gaps, guide intervention planning, and support targeted instructional adjustments.
  • Use literacy assessment data and progress monitoring cycles to support timely instructional decision making and accelerate growth for below proficient and at risk students.
  • Partner with teachers, interventionists, and school leaders to develop and implement literacy action plans with clear benchmarks for instructional improvement and student achievement growth.
  • Support the implementation of effective MTSS practices related to literacy instruction, intervention, progress monitoring, and tiered student supports to reduce skill gaps and improve outcomes across Tiers 1, 2, and 3.
  • Design and facilitate professional learning opportunities focused on evidence based literacy instruction, structured literacy practices, intervention strategies, and virtual instructional best practices.
  • Strengthen educator capacity through professional learning, instructional support, modeling, and collaborative problem solving that result in measurable shifts in instructional practice and student engagement.
  • Increase the quality, rigor, and engagement of literacy instruction within virtual classrooms as evidenced by lesson artifacts, instructional observations, student participation, and academic performance trends.
  • Collaborate with curriculum, instructional, intervention, and special education teams to support aligned, standards based literacy instruction and continuous improvement efforts across grade levels.
  • Contribute to curriculum review, instructional refinement, and continuous improvement processes to ensure literacy instruction remains aligned to research, state standards, and organizational priorities.
  • Apply current literacy research, Pennsylvania literacy initiatives, structured literacy expectations, and evidence based instructional practices to support measurable student achievement gains.
  • Strengthen collaborative relationships with educators and leadership teams to promote shared accountability, instructional consistency, and improved literacy outcomes for students.
  • Support organizational literacy goals, school improvement initiatives, and academic priorities through data informed instructional leadership and educator support.
  • Maintain current knowledge of literacy research, instructional best practices, intervention systems, and virtual instructional models to support innovation and continuous improvement.
  • Performs additional tasks and responsibilities as assigned.

     

Supervisory Responsibilities

This position has no regular supervisory responsibilities.

 

Minimum Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Education, Literacy, Reading, or related field AND
  • 5 Years of relevant work experience OR
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience
  • All PDE required clearances for school-based personnel 

 

Residency Requirement: Resident of Pennsylvania; residents of other states will be considered on a case by case basis.

 

Minimum Required Skill Set

  • Great organizational and time management skills
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Adaptable technology skills
  • Experience using search engines (internet) for research projects
  • Experience using a student information system and/or other type of database
  • Demonstrated competencies with general technology, Microsoft Office Platforms (Outlook, Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Teams, etc.), Google Platforms, Zoom, etc.

     

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Reading, Literacy, Curriculum & Instruction, or related field
  • Reading Specialist Certification
  • Experience in a cyber/virtual learning environment
  • Experience supporting MTSS or intervention programs
  • Knowledge of Pennsylvania literacy standards and assessment practices

Certificates and Licenses 

  • Pennsylvania Teaching Certification required
  • Reading Specialist Certification preferred

  • This is an office-based position. The noise level in the office is usually moderate (computers, printers, light foot traffic).
  • This position could include limited travel and could include limited overnight travel. This is estimated to be less than 10% of the time.
