JOB TITLE:  High School Equivalency Teacher at the Hancock County Correctional Facility

FLSA CLASSIFICATION: Non-exempt, hourly employee

WORK DAYS: Part-time 168 days (does not include holidays)

STANDARD HOURS PER DAY:  8:30 AM – 3:30 PM, Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday  

WORK YEAR: 37 weeks a year

SALARY SCHEDULE & BENEFITS: $40/hour 

REPORTS TO: Director of Adult and Continuing Education 

SUPERVISES: The Teacher does not directly supervise any other employee(s).

 

GENERAL SUMMARY

The Adult Education Teacher is responsible for providing High School Equivalency (HSE) instruction to adult learners participating in educational programming through Hancock County Community Corrections and other Adult and Continuing Education locations as assigned. The teacher is responsible for developing lessons to ensure the curricular content needed to pass and earn the HSE diploma. The teacher uses a variety of instructional methods and techniques to meet the unique needs of adult learners, including justice-involved individuals. The Teacher modifies instruction, re-teaches, and remediates to ensure student success while maintaining a professional, structured, and respectful learning environment in partnership with community corrections staff 

 

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

 

  1. Works with administrators, other Teachers, and community correction staff to plan and implement instruction;
  2. Develops daily lesson plans and presents lessons, using a variety of instructional methods and techniques;
  3. Prepares instruction, using a variety of techniques and strategies, assignments, and assessments for learning;
  4. Monitors, assists, corrects, re-teaches, and remediates student performance to ensure student progress;
  5. Diagnoses and analyzes student progress and programs for the purpose of providing appropriate instruction based on the educational needs of students and barriers of adult learners;
  6. Evaluates and consistently provides feedback to students during instruction, small group sessions, and via other digital platforms;
  7. Participates in an active and cooperative effort with other faculty and staff to plan, implement, and evaluate instruction and instructional programs for continuing school improvement;
  8. Participates in faculty meetings, staff development activities, and personal professional growth activities focused on the acquisition of new and improved skills and knowledge;
  9. Conducts standardized tests in accordance with State guidelines, District policies, and the Principal's expectations;
  10. Maintains all records as required, including but not limited to attendance records, student progress reports, testing documentation, and data required by the Adult Education program and correctional facility guidelines;
  11. Responsible for keeping up to date on current technology, as job-appropriate, being used in the District. With the support of the District, attends training to ensure skill level in various technologies is at the level required to perform in the current position;
  12. Maintains professional conduct and follows all safety, confidentiality, and security procedures established by Hancock County Community Corrections and the Metropolitan School District of Warren Township.  

 

 

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

  1. Bachelor's degree.  An education degree is preferred.
  2. Experience teaching adults

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: The duties and responsibilities of the Adult Education Teacher primarily involve instruction, supervision, and interaction with adult learners in classroom settings located within community corrections facilities and other Adult Education locations.

This position requires regular movement throughout classrooms and correctional facility spaces, including walking, standing, bending, reaching, and occasional lifting or carrying of instructional materials and supplies up to approximately 20 pounds.

The position may require navigating secured facilities and complying with all security procedures and protocols established by Hancock County Community Corrections.

Efficient use of technology and digital instructional platforms is important to the effective accomplishment of job responsibilities.

SENSORY REQUIREMENTS: The ability to communicate verbally in person and through digital platforms is highly important. The ability to present instructional lessons and explain concepts in ways that are readily understood by adult learners is essential.

This position requires visual and auditory awareness sufficient to monitor student behavior, maintain classroom safety, and respond appropriately within a correctional or secured educational environment.

ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS: Tasks are regularly performed in classroom, office, and community corrections environments without significant exposure to adverse environmental conditions. However, the position may involve working within secured facilities and interacting with justice-involved individuals.

The employee is expected to follow all safety, security, and confidentiality procedures established by Hancock County Community Corrections and the Metropolitan School District of Warren Township.
