Steamboat Springs School District is seeking highly qualified Educational Interpreter – American Sign Language to join our team for the 2026-2027 school year.

SALARY INFORMATION:
Full time position, working 174 Days/Year; classified/ hourly position - Entry range with maximum 9 years experience considered $30.50-$34.57 depending on experience.
This position will support students at any grade level
SUMMARY: The educational interpreter serves as a communication link and facilitator between deaf and hard of hearing individuals and those who are speaking to communicate (i.e., the teacher, classmates, or other school personnel). The educational interpreter has the ability to provide the interpreting services in a variety of modes of communication such as American Sign Language, Pidgin Sign English, Oral Transliterating, or Cued Speech. Works at the direction of the Deaf Hard of Hearing Teacher.
PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provide ASL interpreting services in classroom settings, including lectures, discussions, group activities, and one-on-one interactions
- Interpret for extracurricular activities, school events, meetings, and other educational functions as required.
- Adapt interpreting style to match the language preferences and communication needs of the student(s).
- Collaborate with educators, support staff, and families to understand students' Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and align services accordingly.
- Maintain professional boundaries and confidentiality in compliance with ethical guidelines and school policies.
- Prepare for assignments by reviewing relevant materials, including lesson plans, textbooks, and handouts.
- Provide cultural and linguistic mediation as needed to support effective communication.
- Assist in fostering independence and self-advocacy skills among D/HH students.
- Allocate preparation time and engage with the educational team to understand and address students' needs.
- Participate in professional development and maintain certifications as required by the state of Colorado
- Able to maintain the EIPA certification
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Associate's degree or higher from an Interpreter Training Program.
- Valid Colorado Department of Education (CDE) authorization for educational interpreters.
- EIPA (Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment) score of 3.5 or higher.
- Experience working with children, including neurodivergent children.
- Proficiency in American Sign Language and familiarity with Deaf culture.
- Strong understanding of educational settings and the unique needs of D/HH students.
- Communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Commitment to ongoing professional growth and adherence to the NAD-RID Code of Professional Conduct.
- Preferred Qualifications: 2+ years experience working as an interpreter in educational settings.
- Knowledge of educational terminology and practices. Familiarity with assistive technologies and accommodations for D/HH students.
- Computer knowledge is required in computer-related subjects, and computer literacy is preferred for other content areas.
- Ability to maintain individual student records and class files.
- Ability to compile statistics for research and reports.
- Ability to discipline students in keeping with school and district procedures.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality.

Ability to effectively present information and respond professionally to questions from groups of parents, community members, commissions, colleagues and Board of Education. Ability to communicate effectively in American sign language
Mathematical Skills: Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as interest, discounts, commissions, proportions, percentage, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra, and geometry.
Reasoning Ability: Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form, and deal with several abstract concrete variables. Ability to analyze and use data to supervise the delivery of instruction and the school improvement process.
Technology Skills: Proficient use of technology which includes: basic operations and concepts, word processing, spreadsheets, internet usage, critical evaluation of information, data analysis, email, integration of technology.
Other Skills and Abilities: Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory in education. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff and the community. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both in oral and written form. Ability to copy, coordinate, instruct, evaluate and negotiate. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies. Ability to discipline students consistent with district procedures. Ability to maintain confidentiality.
Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, talk, or hear. The employee is continuously required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms. Dexterity to perform manual communication (signing) consistently. Ability to speak clearly and mouth words as appropriate. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. This position is generally in an office or classroom environment with computer specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.
