JOB TITLE: #442 - Assistant Mechanic/Bus Driver 1.0 FTE Transportation
REPORTS TO: Transportation Director/Superintendent
EVALUATED BY: Transportation Director/Superintendent
JOB SUMMARY:
Assist in maintaining all district buses and other vehicles in good operating condition to ensure the safe transport of students and employees of the district.
QUALIFICATIONS OF POSITION
- Possess a current valid Oregon class "B" driver's license issued by the Oregon Department of Motor Vehicles, including air brake, passenger, and "S" endorsements (Not required at time of hire, paid training provided for all necessary bus driver qualifications)
- Must be able to attain a Department of School Bus Driver's Certificate
- Must demonstrate proficiency in the operation of all types of shop tools and test equipment associated with the maintenance and repair of diesel and gasoline-powered trucks and buses
- Experience desired as a mechanic in the repair and maintenance of diesel and gasoline engines, air brakes, automatic transmissions, powertrains, electrical systems and components, and major component overhaul and rebuild
- Demonstrate ability to analyze, diagnose, and correct vehicle faults
- Physical capabilities include the capability to lift medium to heavy weight, stoop, bend and twist
- Ability to follow written and verbal directions
- Skill in written and oral communication
- Ability to use good judgment and follow proper procedures and directives, and work in a safe manner at all times
- Ability to get along with other individuals
- Maintain an up to date First Aid card and appropriate classroom hours
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assist in maintaining the district's transportation fleet in compliance with school district and state/federal standards and requirements
- Assistants in planning and performing the inspections, diagnoses, and repairs of gas and diesel engines and such mechanical equipment as passenger vehicles, buses, trucks, and accessories, and all other equipment used in the district
- Communicates with Head Mechanic for supplies, repair parts, and replacement parts needs
- Assist in maintaining an accurate report of all on-the-road mechanical breakdowns.
- Maintains an orderly arrangement of the work area at the bus garage
- Operates school buses and other vehicles as required to ensure proper repairs and maintenance
- Maintains a regular system for communication with the Head Mechanic regarding mechanical problems or needs
- Assists Administration in creating a positive image with school employees.
- Drive bus routes and trips as needed once they have proper credentials.
- Perform physical requirements which may include:
- Moderate to an extensive degree of physical stamina and frequent lifting up to 50 lbs. and occasional lifting up to 100 lbs
- Frequent and prolonged standing, walking, lying down, and bending
- Exposure to outdoor weather conditions of heat and cold where ventilation may be inadequate
- May require exposure to chemicals, including oil and gas
- Ability to operate district vehicles, power tools, etc.
- May require exposure to the possibility of electrical shock
- Performs other duties as assigned
POSITION BEGINS: July 1, 2026
SALARY RANGE: $24.85/hourly
