School Counselor - Shaker High School
Job Summary:
The North Colonie Central School District seeks a dedicated, student-focused School Counselor to join our team. The ideal candidate will have experience at the secondary level providing academic, career, and personal counseling to students and a strong understanding of the NYS graduation requirements, diploma types, and pathways to ensure all students achieve their post-secondary goals.
Key Responsibilities:
- Guide students and families through the NYS graduation requirements, including credit accumulation, Regents exams, and other state-mandated assessments.
- Educate students on the different diploma options and pathways to graduation
- Assist students in identifying and completing alternative pathways to graduation
- Regularly review student transcripts to ensure they are on track for graduation and intervene when necessary.
- Collaborate with teachers and administrators to develop academic intervention plans.
- Provide college and career counseling, including guidance on post-secondary options, financial aid, and career planning.
- Support students navigating Career and Technical Education programs and vocational training opportunities.
- Help students explore early college programs, dual enrollment, and Advanced Placement (AP) options.
- Provide individual and group counseling to address students' social, emotional, and behavioral needs.
- Support students in overcoming academic and personal challenges that may impact their success.
- Work collaboratively with parents, teachers, and external agencies to provide resources and referrals when necessary.
Qualifications:
- Master's degree in School Counseling
- New York State Certification as a School Counselor.
- Strong knowledge of NYS graduation requirements.
- Experience working with diverse student populations.
- Excellent communication, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively with students, families, and school staff.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience using student information systems to track progress.
- Familiarity with college and career readiness programs.
- Knowledge of social-emotional learning (SEL) strategies.
