Position: Behavior Support Assistant (Multiple positions)

 

Position Summary:The role of the Behavior Support Assistant is to deliver proactive interventions and de-escalation support to students in crisis, fostering a safe, inclusive environment while promoting positive student outcomes.

 

Supervisor: The Behavior Support Assistant is directly responsible to the district director, building principal, or their designee.


Location:District Wide (Specific building assignments at the start of each school year)

Start Date: August 31, 2026
 

Qualifications:

  1. MUST meet the qualifications for the Monroe County Civil Service Title Behavior Support Assistant OR
  2. Be on the current Monroe County Civil Service Behavior Support Assistant List OR
  3. Currently hold the tile of Behavioral Support Assistant
  • Bachelor's Degree in Counseling/Mental Health/Psychology/Education or related field preferred
  • Experience working with students with disabilities
  • Working knowledge of conflict resolution
  • Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position

     

Essential Responsibilities

  • Facilitate immediate crisis intervention and de-escalation for students using function-based and trauma-informed practices.
  • Foster professional rapport through consistent, positive interactions with students and staff.
  • Utilize advanced verbal and non-verbal communication techniques to de-escalate high-stress situations and foster a positive school climate.
  • Complete CPI (Crisis Prevention Institute) training and utilize strategies/techniques to support student safety.
  • Model and coach staff on effective behavioral support techniques and evidence-based intervention strategies.
  • Ensure student safety and accountability through active supervision of groups during various school activities.
  • Partner with teachers and administrators to resolve disciplinary situations in alignment with individual student behavior plans.
  • Provide supportive accompaniment and transitions for students throughout the building, ensuring safety and emotional stability.
  • Actively participate in collaborative meetings, including district workshops, building-level teams, and professional development sessions.
  • Read and implement student 504, IEP and/or behavior plans.
  • Execute behavioral data collection and progress monitoring to inform instructional and behavioral decisions.
  • Participate in Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA) and Behavioral Intervention Plan (BIP) development.
  • Provide flexible support across district, building, or specialized classroom levels as needed.
  • Perform additional position-related duties as assigned by the District Director, Building Principal, or designee.
     
  • Current qualifications for Monroe county Civil Service Title Behavior Support Assistant
    • Graduation from a regionally accredited or NYS registered college with an Associate's degree (or completion of 60 college credits); OR,
    • Two (2) years paid full time or its part time equivalent experience involving the supervision, counseling or instruction of students in a school facility, institution or agency devoted to the care, education, rehabilitation or detention of children; OR,
    • Two (2) years paid full time or its part time equivalent experience responsible for the protection of people or property in a position such as Police Officer, Security Specialist or Military Police; OR,
    • Any equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (A) and (B) above.
