Position Summary
The Certified Music Teacher provides engaging, developmentally appropriate music instruction to students with diverse learning, emotional, behavioral, and physical disabilities in a special education setting. The teacher creates a supportive and inclusive classroom environment that promotes creativity, communication, self-expression, social-emotional growth, and academic success through music education.
Essential Responsibilities
- Develop and implement individualized music instruction aligned with New Jersey Student Learning Standards.
- Adapt curriculum, instructional methods, and materials to meet the unique learning needs outlined in students' IEPs.
- Teach music concepts including rhythm, melody, movement, vocal performance, instrumental activities, and music appreciation.
- Incorporate multisensory teaching strategies, assistive technology, and therapeutic approaches when appropriate.
- Maintain a safe, structured, and positive classroom environment that supports student engagement and behavioral success.
- Collaborate with special education teachers, related service providers, paraprofessionals, and families to support student goals.
- Monitor student progress and maintain accurate documentation, assessments, and reports.
- Participate in IEP meetings, faculty meetings, professional development, and school events as required.
- Organize and support student performances, showcases, or school-wide musical activities when appropriate.
- Maintain classroom equipment, instruments, and instructional materials in good condition.
- Implement behavior management strategies consistent with school policies and student behavior plans.
Qualifications
- Valid New Jersey Teacher of Music Certification required. 2100.
- Experience working with students with special needs preferred.
- Knowledge of differentiated instruction, classroom management, and inclusive educational practices.
- Ability to adapt music instruction for students with varying cognitive, emotional, sensory, and physical abilities.
- Strong communication, collaboration, and organizational skills.
- Familiarity with IEP implementation and special education regulations preferred.
- CPR/First Aid certification preferred.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to move throughout the classroom and school environment.
- Ability to lift and transport musical instruments and classroom materials as needed.
- Ability to participate in movement-based music activities with students.
Preferred Skills
- Experience with adaptive music education techniques.
- Knowledge of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) systems.
- Familiarity with trauma-informed educational practices.
- Ability to play piano, guitar, or other accompaniment instruments preferred.

This position operates within a special education school setting serving students with a range of disabilities, including autism spectrum disorders, emotional disabilities, learning disabilities, developmental delays, and multiple disabilities.
