Job Summary
The ESL Instructional Aide supports English Learners in a middle school setting by providing instructional assistance under the direction of certified teachers. The aide works with small groups and individual students to reinforce English language development, academic vocabulary, and content-area learning while supporting students' social, emotional, and cultural adjustment to the school environment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Instructional Support
- Assist ESL-certified and content-area teachers in delivering instruction aligned to students' English proficiency levels.
- Work with individual students or small groups to reinforce lessons in reading, writing, speaking, and listening.
- Support students in core content areas (ELAR, math, science, social studies) by clarifying directions, vocabulary, and concepts.
- Provide accommodations and linguistic supports as outlined in students' LPAC documentation.
- Help students develop academic language and classroom communication skills.
Student Support
- Encourage positive student engagement, participation, and confidence in using English.
- Support students' social and cultural adjustment to the middle school environment.
- Monitor student behavior and assist with classroom management under teacher direction.
- Serve as a positive role model and advocate for English Learners.
Classroom & Program Support
- Prepare instructional materials and learning resources for ESL instruction.
- Assist with assessments, data collection, and documentation related to student progress.
- Maintain confidentiality of student records and information.
- Communicate effectively with teachers, counselors, and administrators regarding student needs.
- Assist with supervision of students during instructional activities as assigned.
Qualifications
Education
- High school diploma or GED required
- College coursework or an associate degree preferred
Experience
- Experience working with middle school students preferred
- Experience supporting English Learners or diverse student populations preferred
Knowledge & Skills
- Basic understanding of second language acquisition strategies
- Ability to work effectively with students from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Ability to follow instructional plans and teacher guidance
- Bilingual skills preferred (Spanish or other languages common to the student population)
Working Conditions & Physical Requirements
- Work performed in classroom and campus settings
- Ability to stand, walk, and assist students throughout the school day
- Ability to lift and carry instructional materials as needed
- Occasional supervision of students in various campus locations
Evaluation
Performance is evaluated in accordance with district policies and procedures for paraprofessional staff.
*Salary is commensurate with experience
*Minimum Salary $22,186
*Works 187 Day Calendar
*Please note that this role requires in-person attendance and is not eligible for remote work.
