Job Title: Outward Bound Advisor
Location: Cooperstown High School
Reports To: Director of Physical Education, Athletics & Extracurricular Activities- Josh Wagner
The Outward Bound Advisor coordinates and supports the selection and preparation of Cooperstown High School students for participation in the Outward Bound program offered by the Clark Sports Center. This intensive outdoor education program challenges students physically, mentally, and emotionally while promoting leadership, teamwork, and personal growth through adventure-based learning in the wilderness of Maine.
- Promote the Outward Bound opportunity to eligible high school students and guide them through the written application process.
- Coordinate with the Clark Sports Center and Outward Bound staff regarding student selection and scholarship opportunities.
- Prepare selected students for the 21-day wilderness expedition, which includes:
- Canoeing
- Backpacking
- A reflective “solo” experience
- Community service components
- Support student and family communication and logistics for travel to and from the Outward Bound facility in Maine (typically departing the last week of June).
- Serve as a liaison between students, families, the Clark Sports Center, and school staff before and after the program.
- Encourage students to reflect on and share their experiences upon return, emphasizing growth in leadership, character, and resilience.
To inspire character development and self-discovery in people of all ages and walks of life through challenge and adventure, and to impel them to achieve more than they ever thought possible, to show compassion for others, and actively engage in creating a better world.
Preferred Qualifications:
Outward Bound or Wilderness Experience: Personal participation in or direct experience with Outward Bound or similar wilderness-based experiential education programs.
Counseling or Mentoring Background: Experience mentoring or advising youth through challenging developmental experiences.
Event or Trip Coordination:Experience planning student travel or overnight excursions, especially those involving physical and emotional preparation.
Leadership & Facilitation:Ability to lead reflective discussions, promote personal growth, and facilitate group conversations on leadership and resilience.
