Custodian: Penrose Elementary School


Position Summary

The Custodian is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, and well-organized school environment for students, staff, families, and community members. This position supports the daily operations of Penrose Elementary School by performing custodial duties, assisting with building needs, and helping ensure the school facility is ready for learning and school-related activities.

Qualifications

The successful candidate shall possess the following qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Experience in custodial care of buildings and grounds preferred.
  • Knowledge of cleaning procedures, custodial equipment, and chemicals used for cleaning and sanitation.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with building staff, district staff, students, families, and community members.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Must be dependable, flexible, and willing to assist with building needs as they arise.
  • Must be physically able to perform a variety of custodial tasks, including lifting, pushing, pulling, digging, twisting, bending, reaching, and standing for extended periods of time.
  • Successful completion of all required criminal background screenings and fingerprinting.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The Custodian shall perform duties including, but not limited to, the following:

  • Clean and maintain classrooms, offices, restrooms, hallways, common areas, and other assigned areas of the school building.
  • Sweep, mop, vacuum, scrub, strip, wax, and polish floors as needed.
  • Empty trash and recycling containers and dispose of waste properly.
  • Clean and sanitize restrooms, drinking fountains, sinks, fixtures, and other high-touch areas.
  • Refill paper products, soap, and other supplies as needed.
  • Assist with setup, cleanup, and custodial support for school events, activities, and meetings.
  • Maintain custodial closets, supplies, and equipment in a safe and organized manner.
  • Use cleaning chemicals and equipment safely and in accordance with district procedures.
  • Report maintenance concerns, safety hazards, damage, or needed repairs to the appropriate supervisor.
  • Assist with snow removal, grounds cleanup, and exterior building needs as assigned.
  • Secure the building as directed, including checking doors, windows, lights, and assigned areas.
  • Support a safe, clean, and welcoming school environment for students, staff, and visitors.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the building administrator, head custodian, or district administration.

Work Schedule

This position is scheduled for a 9-hour workday, four days per week, as assigned by the District.

Salary and Benefits

  • Salary according to the Fremont RE-2 Classified Salary Schedule.

Physical Requirements

This position requires the ability to perform physically demanding work, including lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, climbing, bending, kneeling, twisting, reaching, digging, and standing or walking for extended periods of time. The employee may be required to lift and/or move custodial supplies, equipment, furniture, and other materials as needed.
