SCHOOL NURSE 179 Day Contract
Description
Qualifications:
1. Bachelor's Degree or higher obtained from an accredited program is the area of Nursing
2. Hold or be eligible to hold a Colorado Special Service Provider License with an endorsement in Nursing. License must be active or in process by first day of school
3. Hold or be eligible to hold licensure by the Department of Regulatory Agencies (DORA)
Reports To PPBOCES Director of Special Education or Designee.
Job Summary:
This position will support students at one or more of the PPBOCES member districts.
The School Nurse is a member of the educational team who instructs and directs children and staff to promote the mental and physical health of students so they may participate in and benefit from the educational program. To accomplish this task, the school nurse will work to remove, reduce or modify health-related barriers to learning by performing or supervising the performance of the following services as established by the Standards of School Nursing Practice and in accordance with the Colorado Nurse Practice Act, the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and the Colorado Exceptional Children's Educational Act (ECEA).
Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Ensure the health needs of students are addressed during the school day
2. May be assigned to multiple schools or districts and responsible for delegating nursing skills according to the Nurse Practice Act
3. Manages communicable diseases outbreaks
4. Directs the immunization program
5. Oversees delegated nursing tasks
6. Develops and implements health care plans as required
7. Serves as liaison between students, teachers, administrators, parents and community health care providers
8. Participates in documentation required for the School Medicaid program
9. Provides care for acute health care needs, including emergencies
10. Conducts health assessments
11. Participates in the identification process of students suspected to a disability under IDEA and ECEA
12. Trains and delegates appropriate tasks to necessary school staff
13. Oversees vision and hearing screening programs
14. Oversees the medication administration policy of schools
15. Directs and oversees student wellness programs
16. Makes referrals as necessary for any health care needs, hearing and vision, immunizations, etc.
17. Completes updates and maintains student records (accident reports, health records, etc.)
18. Engages in professional development activities and stays abreast of current practices and procedures to support licensure requirements and professional goals
19. Perform other duties as requested by the Assistant Director of Special Education, Director of Special Education, the Executive Director and the PPBOCES Board of Directors (Board)

Evaluation:
This position shall be evaluated in accordance with the Colorado State Model System for Evaluation of Special Service Providers and in accordance with board policy.
Salary, Working Time, Vacation, Etc.:
This position is 179 days (unless otherwise stated on the contract) per year based on the Pikes Peak BOCES 179 calendar(s). Nurse works in district of assignment when district is in session and out of PPBOCES when districts are closed. Travel to each of school districts on a weekly basis is required.
The salary range starts at $60,000 and initial placement is determined by education and experience starting Contracts are on an annual basis and are subject to renewal or nonrenewal at the discretion of the Board.
Working Conditions:
-Talking and hearing, walking, standing or bending is frequently required
-Reaching with hands and arms, climbing or balancing, stooping or kneeling is also required
-The employee must occasionally lift and/or move objects up to 25 pounds
-Travel to assigned job site(s) requires driving. Employee may be asked to drive to any member district at any time using personal or BOCES vehicle. Reimbursement is in accordance with board policy.
-All required license(s) must be maintained in an active status without suspension or revocation throughout employment.
-Any employee may be required to stay at or return to work during meetings and/or emergencies to perform duties specific to this classification or to perform other duties as requested in an assigned position. This may require working a non-traditional work schedule or working outside normal assigned duties during the meeting and/or emergency.
