About us

  • With 14 schools and 5,600 students, the Roaring Fork School District is located in the culturally vibrant and naturally stunning Roaring Fork Valley, serving the communities of Glenwood Springs, Carbondale, and Basalt. The Roaring Fork Schools believe that teachers are our most important asset, and our teachers enjoy a true teacher voice in decision-making; clear and collaborative leadership, small class sizes; a highly competitive and progressive salary schedule, access to our affordable housing program; and a culture of self-care and well-being. We believe diversity is a strength, and our staff makes a real difference for our students from diverse ethnicities, cultures, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • GSHS is home to 1000 students, grades 9-12.  GSHS is the largest of four high schools within the Roaring Fork School District RE-1.
  • The school is located in a mountain resort town in an area of outstanding natural beauty. We serve a comprehensive population in that we draw from all socio-economic classes, and we have more or less equal populations of Anglos and Latinos. Our free and reduced lunch rate is over 40%. Our mantra is Changing Students' Real-Life Chances. We are focused on academics, but we are committed to the development of the whole person.
  • We have used the Advanced Placement program as a turnkey system for ratcheting up academic rigor. All juniors are required to take either AP English Language and Composition or English Literature. We are nationally ranked in the top 10% of high schools by US News and World Report. We have the Platinum award in the College Board AP Honors Roll. All faculty are encouraged to train to teach AP (at our expense) even if they are not currently teaching at that level. Those who teach grade 9 students must be aware of the steep academic incline from grade 9 that leads to success in grades 11 and 12.
  • We enthusiastically maintain a full program of fine arts, theatre, band and choir, JROTC, and athletics.

Position Overview

  • Glenwood Springs High School seeks an outstanding Spanish teacher to join a high-achieving department in this award-winning school.
  • The successful candidate will have a strong academic background. The ability to teach AP-level classes is desirable. More important is a passion for teaching freshmen.
  • We do not see teaching as a popularity contest, but we accept that only teachers who can connect powerfully with students, who can engage them and be persistently, non-possessively warm, are fitted for this work.
  • Teaching is not a one-person performance. Commitment to collaboration with colleagues is essential.
  • We are influenced by Ron Edmonds, who said in the mid-1970s: "We can, whenever and wherever we choose, successfully teach all children whose schooling is of interest to us. We already know more than we need to do this. Whether we do it or not must finally depend on how we feel about the fact that we have not done it so far.''
