Position Summary

San Carlos High School, a public Title I school located on the San Carlos Apache reservation in Arizona, seeks a dedicated and culturally responsive Physical Education Teacher for grades 9–12. The ideal candidate is committed to supporting the academic, physical, social, and emotional development of students while promoting lifelong wellness, healthy lifestyles, teamwork, and leadership.

The Physical Education Teacher will create a safe, inclusive, and engaging learning environment that honors and respects Native American cultures, traditions, and community values. The teacher will provide standards-based instruction aligned with Arizona state standards and collaborate with school staff, families, and community members to support student success.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement engaging physical education curriculum aligned with Arizona Academic Standards for Physical Education.
  • Teach a variety of fitness, sports, recreation, wellness, and health-related activities appropriate for grades 9–12.
  • Promote physical fitness, teamwork, sportsmanship, leadership, and healthy decision-making.
  • Differentiate instruction to meet diverse student learning needs and abilities.
  • Maintain a safe, structured, and positive classroom and athletic environment.
  • Assess student progress and maintain accurate records of attendance, grades, and performance.
  • Integrate culturally relevant practices and activities that reflect and honor Native American traditions and values when appropriate.
  • Encourage student participation in school and community wellness activities.
  • Collaborate with teachers, counselors, administrators, families, and tribal/community partners to support student achievement and well-being.
  • Supervise students during instructional periods, locker room transitions, assemblies, and school activities.
  • Maintain and inventory physical education equipment and facilities.
  • Participate in professional development, staff meetings, and school improvement initiatives.
  • Support school-wide goals related to attendance, engagement, academic achievement, and social-emotional learning.
  • Comply with district policies, state regulations, and student safety procedures.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by administration.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Physical Education, Kinesiology, Education, or related field.
  • Valid Arizona Teaching Certificate with appropriate Physical Education endorsement for secondary education.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain Arizona Fingerprint Clearance Card.
  • Knowledge of adolescent development and effective classroom management practices.
  • Strong communication, organization, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with students, families, tribal communities, and staff from diverse backgrounds.
  • Commitment to equity, cultural responsiveness, and student-centered instruction.
  • Experience working in rural, Title I, or Native American communities preferred.
  • Coaching experience preferred but not required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of physical fitness principles, sports instruction, and student wellness.
  • Ability to motivate and engage high school students in physical activity.
  • Ability to create inclusive environments that support all fitness and skill levels.
  • Understanding of trauma-informed and culturally responsive educational practices.
  • Ability to collaborate as part of a professional learning community.

Physical Demands

  • Ability to demonstrate physical activities and movements.
  • Ability to stand, walk, run, bend, lift, and participate in physical activities for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift and move equipment up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.

Work Environment

This position includes classroom instruction, gymnasium activities, outdoor athletic spaces, and school-sponsored events. The teacher may work in varying weather conditions common to Arizona climates and will engage with students in active learning environments daily.
